Do you have a link to a story? Access control that includes vehical searches at shopping malls is very rare, or nonexistant, and that is the implication I get from your mention: that the guy was stopped at a vehical checkpoint.

Neither article mentioned that the guards weren't supposed to be searching vehicles coming into the parking garage, so I am assuming that they were doing what they should. But, do they search, or look inside, EVERY vehicle that comes in? Is that garage a special purpose garage?

It is also interesting that a couple of weeks ago someone stole a few thousand ponds of fertilizer from a farm here in cental MA. Fortunately, it wasn't the bomb making variety.
