I used to do some risky stuff as a kid, but never with trains.

http://wreg.com/2016/10/23/child-hit-and-killed-by-train-in-ripley-tn/

Neighbors tell WREG, children were playing a game they call chicken; kids run across the tracks, trying to beat the train. Saturday evening, two other children made it across the tracks, but sadly the fourth-grader was no match for the quick and powerful train. She died on the scene.

RIP little one.

That said, I always tell my kids it's too easy to lose your life to do stupid things that increase your chances.

So never the train scene from Footloose?

And I live in TX where most die from crossing the tracks because they thought they could make it. Nothing stops a fully loaded train on a dime hell most don't stop in a mile. Know one kid where I grew up that got his leg cut off for trying to jump on a train. Even got on the local media because he was an idiot and got his leg severered

WREG reached out to the company that owns the train, Canadian National Railway. According to the company, the train involved was a northbound freight train. No one on the train was hurt.

Well physically, but I can only imagine the emotional toll on the conductor.  Sad situation.

I had a student killed by a train several years ago.  He would always try to race trains to the crossings in his car, and it had gotten to the point his friends didn't like to ride with him much.  He was hit before school started and the railroad had to replace the conductor because the original one didn't want to finish the trip.

7th grade a bunch of us would get on a train as it went by the school. We'd ride it down to a little creek and just do kid stuff. One day one of the boys (Eric) missed as he went for the train. He lost both legs.

We use to play chicken with the trains on this RR trestle, it was about 15 feet high over the river, I didn't go this day and there were about 5 or 6 kids from my neighborhood , one kid named Bobby froze , he jumped at the very last second, the train hit him going about 50 mph (cops told us that later)
The train hit his right hind quarters, sliced a piece of his ass off, like a big chunk, knocked him 20 ft into the air my buddies told me , he landed in the river 10 ft from his brother who dragged him to shore.

I remember all my friends saying they yelled as loud as they could "JUMP BOBBY JUMP!!!" he just stood there looking at the train coming dead at him.

He said he didn't remember why he stood there so long, I think maybe he was thinking of staying there and getting hit on purpose.

Why?

Nothing he did had anything to do with it.   I can see getting a bit upset over an accident in general, but not one where the deceased was doing something boneheaded like that.  9 or not.

As a locomltive engineer that is nightmare stuff.  I know what it's like to hit someone after watching them disappear under the nose of the engine.  To say it is traumatic is an understatement.

Well the conductor probably didn't. Probably didn't even have one.

But I'm sure the engineer is extremely upset.

Where I work, the train comes in daily to do switches. The conductor has some stories about some absolutely crazy shit people do on the tracks. There isnt much they can do but watch it happen since they can't exactly stop on a dime.

well...it sucks for the whole crew,  no one in their right mind wants to be involved in an incident where anyone is killed, especially a kid.  And for quite some time, every time they go by that spot on the rail they are going to relive that incident to some degree....

Yeah, this.

My uncle was an engineer and he wasn't a particularly sensitive guy. He told my old man that he had hit a few people, mostly people committing suicide, and it "stays with you".

It's one thing to hit an adult that wants to die. I'd imagine hitting a 9 year old girl who had her whole like ahead of her and wasn't intending to commit suicide fucks with your head.

LOL. Shows what the fuck I know. Diddly and squat. I'll shut my pie-hole now.

When I envision a conductor it's a guy in a funny uniform dealing with passengers. After googling it, turns out every train has to have a conductor and an engineer.

I'm back in my lane now.

They'll make sure everyone was sober and the train's speed was within the local limits, all the controls worked properly, etc. If that sounds like an exercise in CYA, it mostly is, but a little kid was killed and they know how bad they will look if they appear to ignore the death.
