Do you need a permit to conceal-carry a knife? Are there restrictions on the blade dimensions on which you can legally carry? Age restrictions?

I figure if the college campus won't let me conceal-carry a firearm, a knife would be better than unarmed combat if I ever were to be approached by a mugger or something. I still have yet to check UT's CoC to see if I can actually carry one, but that's another story...

ETA: Also please recommend a knife that is good for carrying. Thanks

If they don't allow guns, all my money's on no knives as well.

Knives are generally prohibitted, but unlike guns, a case can still be made for having a knife if you are caught. Knives are tools.

Although they are expensive, Emerson folders are my favorite for carry. The Wave feature makes for quick deployment and I tend to forget that it is in my pocket, which has never happened with any other knife I have carried. They can be had at reasonable prices all over the internet. I got mine in the EE here in excellent condition at about half of MSRP.

Carry a Benchmade 610 Rukus I just got one, and if you don't or can't carry a gun this is one mean bastard to have in your pocket.

Knives under 5" are the ONLY weapon-like object allowed on my campus, so I carry a Kershaw Blur (Ken Onion design, assisted opening).

In Texas, you can carry a concealed (or unconcealed) knife as long is the blade is under 5.25 inches and as long as it's not double-edged. Switchblades and butterfly knives are also a no-no. I've got the Ken Onion-Kershaw Leek. It's extremely slim and comfortable to carry. Also has assisted opening.

Wrong:

Look up Texas PC 46.01

I'm not up on Texas law or what is legal to carry on campus [and now it is proably worse]...But my general rule on knife carry is this...if it looks like a weapon most cops will treat it like one. So pick a knife with a blade no bigger than 4 in and as tool like as possiable. A good choice would be something a Spyderco Endura..it's big enough to work as a tool and still penatrate deep enough to do some damage. There are alot of good knives out there, so fiding one that fits you should be easy...just remember you get what you pay for.

I'd rather be shot than stabbed, and I'll carry a gun (legal or not) anywhere I feel I'd need a knife (concealed means concealed, after all)

Besides, my Benchmade automatic is a felony in CO, and even if I didn't have a CCW permit carrying a gun would only be a misdemeanor.  (And you can open carry anywhere outside of Denver anyway)

That because I'm guessing you have never been shot, most people while have never been shot ...have been cut or stabbed. For me explaining to a police officer why I'm carrying a knife that may or may not be legal...as always been easier than explaining why I got a illegally carried SW 686 in my waistband.

If the primary use for the knife is as a weapon, I would get a fixed blade.

I carry a Strider DB

The Spyderco Civilian that CFII mentioned is another great choice for a purely defensive blade.

Since in RI the knives need to have under a 3" blade, I was limited to my options.  I carry a Ka-bar TDI
