Learned this week that I will be spending a week in Bruchsal, DE in the very near future. It is roughly half way between Frankfurt and Stuttgart. Any tips or suggestions on what to do during the weekend I will have free? I'll arrive on a thurs and depart the next thurs......

Drink beer and chase fraulein's or you may want to book a Porsche factory tour and go to the Porsche and BMW museums in Stuttgart and Munich. This way you get to drive on the Autobahn.
|
|
Ask around and see if any of the small towns will be having a beerfest while you are there. I always found those to by fun.
|
|
Germans live there. I made 2 trips to Germany, but I never made it out of Kaiserslautern.
|
|
Drink a lot of Bier and pork a lot of tall blonde German females with tig ole bitties.

See if you can get out to the Castle Hohenzollern. It's pretty close to Stuttgart from what I remember.

Get out and enjoy the city sites. If I remember correctly, Wurzburg has a castle on top of a hill with a view of the city and the river.
Here you go. Wurzburg info |

Try hard not to be shocked over the price of gasoline per liter.

I'd say hit Heidelberg - it's real close, and has a nice castle / downtown strip area.
It really depends on what you're into. If it were me, I'd probably go to Rothenburg ob der Tauber - a great old city to explore. |
|
Downtown Stuttgart is nice with a few good restaurants. I was there a couple days ago. I'd imagine you are near a rail line which will make visiting a piece of cake.

Got to meet a guy who worked at the castle and survived the earthquake (and later two hohenzollerns elsewhere). http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/3e/Burg_Hohenzollern_ak.jpg/800px-Burg_Hohenzollern_ak.jpg It was over 20 years ago when I went, but it was worth the time IMO. |

Any porn with the word "German" in the title is best avoided.

Be careful. I went to visit for two weeks and stayed two years. Still go back for a few weeks every year.

I too found out that I'll be spending time that amounts to a year in Germany so on behalf of OP and myself:
Is there an HK factory that one can tour |

Bruchsal is boring as hell
go drive down to Karlsruhe or Baden-Baden Heidelberg is also near by also drive over the boarder into France Nuremberg, Ulm, Augsburg are also fun to visit If you have time also drive to Ingolstadt home of the Audi that is pretty much all I have I have not been in a while to these areas but you can not go wrong with any of those picks |

The sidewalks roll up at 9:00 pm, you can only buy coffee and petrol on sundays (and some times mondays), they have deli style german meat kiosks in the airport and german women are very friendly. Go see the castle at marburg if you can. There's some neat stuff there. Politeness will earn your amazing rewards.

Some of you folks really need a refresher on German geography.
|
|
If driving, be warned that Germans are anal when it comes to rules. There are signs for everything. Europeans use flashers to warn others when traffic is stopping ahead, don't pass on the right, and remember only parts of the highway have no speed limit. It is difficult to get around so rely on a GPS instead of the traditional maps. Also, make sure to ask the car rental company the name of fuel you need to put in the car.
Also, expect to pay the attendant in the public bathrooms. |

Halfway between S and F ?
Drive South through Stuttgart towards Tubingen then hang a left. Wander as you wish on the SouthEasternly back roads from there. |

wursburg is alotta fun, I defenately 2nd that recomendation, go early in the day and see the castle, also ask a taxi driver were the entrance to the path to the castle is, the 1st time i went to the wursburg castle me and a girl i was dating walked around the thing damn near all day and every path we found dead ended and didnt actually lead inside. finally found a way in around sun set, and they sell wine inside the castle buy the way, so we sat up there and overlooked the city and drank wine during the sun set ( so i ended up getting lucky anyway). point is be sure of the route into the castle before you walk there or you will wander up and down steep hiking paths all day.
if you are single, bar hop around town, alot of great disco-teks and bars. if you are looking for action as you are new in town you will prolly get lucky, wursburg has a lot of college girls and bayern chicks seem to swarm the new guy with the sexy american accent, plus with the near by US mil bases closed (schweinfurt and wurzburg are now closed) they will find AMerican men to be a rarety and you wont have to contend with to many USGI's. also if you strick out you can always go to a house and pick out a feisty one you like for $60 EU. but be warned, the bars dont close untill dawn but the houses close at 2:00 or 3:00 so dont wait till 4:00am and decide thats what yer gonna do cause you will be shit outa luck. spent many years stationed next town over from wursburg before conn barricks closed down. |

Spatzle with speck will be a good memory. Don't drive in the left lane unless you are passing. This tends to piss the Germans off and will lead to a stern talk with the Polizei. The traffic cops there have the personality of a pittbull with a nut rash. Only certain spots on any autobahn will have no speed limits. Use gps for everything. Stopping at the corner store for directions just don't happen unless you speak German. Carry Euro coins everywhere if you plan on using the bathroom. Depending how new it is it might be a coin operated machine to get in. If not plan on paying a bored looking woman to enter. For the most part the people will be helpful and friendly. Much of the younger crowd will speak some English. This time of year the women will be dressed just right. The average gal you will see would be an 8 or 9 here. The women in Germany are tied with Poland for the most beautiful in the world. Be nice and the women will be nice back. They love the American accent. Remember a good camera.

I'm here now in Nuremberg. I rented a Porsche on Wednesday from Avis and drove it to Stuttgart for the Porsche factory tour. The restaurant there is very nice but formal. The auto Bahn is awesome. I had no problems but drove very fast. Average speed was 150 kl per hr. I hit 275 kl / 155 Mph on Wednesday and 185 mph yesterday. I have gopro Video proof for you guys when I get back home.
Food has been great (I'm German heritage so it's like home but better). I had a doner last night very gut. If I was single I would tear this place up. Hott womenz everywhere. So far everyone has been very nice and I'm having a lot of fun. I leave tomorrow for Munich. |

Stuttgart has everything.
Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen, Mercedes more in the city. Lots of other museums and a historical downtown. Ulm is not worth it in my opinion. Würzburg is about 170 km from Bruchsal. Augsburg 250 km. Munich ~300km. Really??? That is still at least 2 hours on the autobahn or 3 horror-hours by train. Quoted:

Bigger gas stations are 24/7 and have EVERYTHING.(Beware of the markup.) Don't know what deli style is, but try a döner or a subway. |
