This article brought up some interesting arguements.  The specifics of this particular instance can be debated but I am interested in the big picture.

The tax situation in this country has reached the point where we will begin to see businesses leave the country in order to escape a large tax burden.  Wealthy individuals have and will do the same.

Have we set ourselves up for failure?  

Who will the government shift the tax burden to?(We can assume for arguements sake that taxes will not be reduced.)

Are these people and these businesses right for leaving or are they traitors or unpatriotic?

What do you guys think?

This is why the stupidity of government fascinates me.  Increase sales tax and/or tax on goods in one state...people begin to buy stuff out of state to avoid said tax.  They call it the black market, I call it free enterprise.  For instance, I prefer to buy over the internet when I can since in many cases I can get the product cheaper after shipping because sales tax in California is so high...people buy cigarettes from Indian tribes or out of my state since the cig taxes are so high...and we are evil for doing so because we are avoiding paying taxes.

Business' are the same way.  They have to pay a lot of taxes...they shift that burden on the consumer.  The consumer will go elsewhere unless they have a good reason to buy from said place...buy American if you will, or its worth the added cost.  The producer to avoid losing business will go to another state or country since it'll be cheaper to produce and the consumer will more than likely buy it since its cheap.  The EU recently issued a thing where the countries are instituting a tax on US e-products and soon hard goods because since we don't tax them their people are buying from us more.  Some countries will be adding a 10% tax or 15% tax (EDIT: Ok was low, Sweden is going as high as 25%...[url=http://www.tradecompass.com/daily_brief/index.asp?briefdate=20020508&page=today#1]EU article[/url]...


Its sickinging, hopefully government will realize that by increasing taxes sure for a while you get more revenue but then the business/corporation will leave and then you'll lose revenue...also, the loss of jobs.


I don't blame them for leaving...more power to them.

What makes my blood boil is ignorant talk of paying my "fair" share.  Who the hell decided what is fair?

Here in Alaska we have a free money for all residents - about 2000 bucks a head every year.  Now, there is talk of an income tax to balance out the massive deficit, and keep the Permanent Fund giveaway intact.  

The real bitch of it all is that my tax bracket will pay the most, with minimum wage earners and very high wage earners paying a less rate.  WTF!!!  

So, a single guy like me will be screwed, while a family of 5 will get, no strings attached, about 10 grand of MONEY and pay only a few hundred in income taxes.  Meanwhile, I will likely break even or pay money.

Bastards!  If the legislature was not safe in remote tiny socialist Juneau, they would probably find mob justice.

Why are companies Daimler Benz, BMW, Mitsubishi, Siemens, Ericcson, Nokia crawling all over themselves to open plants in the US?

No way is any business unpatriotic for leaving the USA. In my opinion anyone who finds a way to cheat the government out of taxes and does it is a patriot.

Our tax structure for business still ranks the U.S. favorably.

Phony cost allocation within large companies probably drives more of our work to foreign countries than the tax structure.  As an example let us say General Electric has a facility in Roanoke, Va., with all the accompanying management overhead.  If you cost a job with the U.S. corp overhead factored in and cost that same job in Mexico with only the local overhead then Mexico is going to cost less.  But this is dumb you're probably saying ?  Any you would be correct but still this idiocy happens every day.

Those companies are opening plants here, but that doesn't get them any tax gain or loss. The issue is American companies moving their corporation headquarters offshore, like the Stanley Tool Company just voted to do today, so as to lower their US tax burden.

It is not just taxes. It is governmet regulations as well. Let me not foget to mention unions. I am making a product and really wanted to make it in the US. However the stack of forms and regulations made that an impossibility for me.  I also didn't want employees that could sue me for metacarpal and any other "diaseses". No telling how many jobs the government has cost the US.

Texas! Yes, those damn texans are ruining the economy. They are running ALL the good jobs to Mexico. Texas is a HUGE state as well. They consume WAY too many resources. Oh, what.. Taxes, you said taxes... never mind....

So far I agree with most everyone.  I don't know of any solution.  I am afraid that our government has become too big to turn and impossible to stop.  Depressing isn't it.

armdlbrl...I don't know where you are getting your info...but nokia is not building a factory in the US......nokia just laid off over 600 workers at the factory in Fort Worth Texas....

It's not because of our low corporate tax structure.  It's got to do with US content.  Import taxes are lower if you import parts and assemble the vehicles here using US labor, than importing a complete vehicle, for example.
