I've never played with tannerite so I just don't know on this one.

What if you put some of that stuff inside of say a JHP .45 round? Would there be enough of it to make any type of explosion when you shot a hard target?

Just wondering.

might be interesting, but then again it might go off during firing, which would be REALLY interesting

Did you get this idea from my post in the "Deagle clip" thread?

From what I understand, Tannerite requires a certain amount of kinetic energy to detonate.  Most rifle bullets will set it off, but pistol ammo usually won't.

If you loaded it into a standard pistol hollowpoint, I doubt it would do anything.

If you were to put it into a HP rifle bullet, it might detonate whan striking a hard object.

In anycase, I doubt it would blow when the round is fired.  And if it did work, I don't see much use for it.  Anything this could do could probably be accomplished using incendiary rounds.

I believe it's illegal to make explosive ammo...

YMMV

sounds like the urban legend of drilling the hollowpoint in a .45 a little deeper and fitting a .22 short into it backwards so that when fired the impact of the round on target will cause the "rim" around the hollowpoint to detonate the rimfire and make the .45 fragment with greater force.

Anyone want to try that one and video it going into gelatin?

I think there was a pic floating around where someone had it in a 37mm round.Blew his hand clean off.I wouldnt try it IMO.

Okay, think about that for a second.

You want to put explosives, in a gun, and fire them.

Think about that.

Someone needs to look up "Dynamite Guns" and write 500 words on why Dynamite guns were not used for very long.

So is this the same as putting black powder in a hollow point, a primer (striking surface out) and then a BB in it and putting epoxee?

I could try it with a 200 gr. and tr to get it around 230 before loading it, might take a 4 day weekend and a lot of rain outside, and some beer before I take the challenge.

Ammonium nitrate based explosives have a 'critical mass' which is required for them to explode.  The critical mass is dependent on the diameter of the charge and the strength of the container.  For instance, if you are mining with it you can make relatively small diameter bore holes and will still get a complete explosion because of the heavy degree of confinement in solid rock.  You can usually get away with Tannerite in a small plastic container the size for 35mm film.  The critical mass is also dependent on what you are using to set off the charge:  impact from a bullet being more difficult than a blasting cap.  But there is no way that you could have enough in the hollow of a .45 cal bullet for it to explode.  Try lead or silver azide instead.

How bout if you drilled out a .45 and put a brown recluse spider in the cavity...

I drilled some .22 hollowpoints out to hold  cigarette lighter flints.  They made a nice shower of sparks when they hit rock or steel.  I got the idea from UC.

The round passed right through the small propane cylinders without enough resistance to make a spark. It didn't have enough punch to penetrate the large propane cylinders.

Tannerite probably wouldn't work.  However, take a .45 HP, deepen the cavity, put in a few grains of black powder, pop in a pistol primer then wax it over.  I personally have never done this, however I did see it done once.  Blew a 4"x4" post in half.  By the way, don't try to sue me if you try this and it goes KABOOM since it's very dangerous.  MJD

Even if you didn't get darwin-awarded, wouldn't this cause the bullet to explode upon impact, rather than PENETRATE the target and do internal damage?

Let's start a myth, then we can ask the Mythbusters.

Buster will hold the gun, while Jamie and Adam hide behind the "blast shield".

They'll blow up anything...

I buy spotter rounds for my Barrett .50 BMG that have explosive tips in them.

Okay, so which ARFCOMMER only has one hand?  I have 2 of them, it's not me...
