From what I understand, the Batista government let us lease it or something, after Castro took over we pretty much took the "come and take it from us" attitude.

After the Spanish-American war, the US freed Cuba from Spanish control. Being that we freed it in a time of Imperialistic expansion the Cubans were afraid we would annex it as a common wealth. In agreement for their freedom, we were granted a military installation to help control and police the Gulf of Mexico.
We give them freedom, they give us a land for a military installation. |

All you ever wanted to know about Gunatanamo Bay ...
Pretty interesting that the base is entirely self-sufficient after Castro cut off all supplies and utilities, they built a desalinazation plant to provide water and power to the base, and all of their supplies come in by boat now. |

my dad flies into Gitmo twice a month, since its on the south side of the island he has to fly allllll the way around cuba and come in from the south. adds hundreds of miles to the trip.
