Get it, helluva price on a great shotgun. They shoot the mini-shells too.

It shouldn't have a mag extension btw.

Great price and it's a OK shotgun but I'd still go for a 870 before a Mossie. Dang things will run forever.
Link Posted: 8/15/2005 7:03:31 AM EDT
buy it, or let me know were i can.

+1

Honestly, nothing wrong with the 590. It's main weakness is that it's not an 870.

Send the barrel to Vang Comp.

You'll thank me later.

I'm an 870 fan, but for that price, I'd have to think real hard on it.

You always have your 870 fans, of course the military seems to trust the 590.

Mossbergs are great guns, and 870's break down just as quick, have a 500 with over 2000rds, around half bird shot so not to hard on the gun. I have been through two barrels however, but the shotgun is a great.

I had a wingmaster, damn thing fell apart after a few hundred rounds.

and the 870, and the ithaca, and the benelli.

I have a 590A1. Lot’s of evil black goodness. The bayo lug is just added terror.

I love 8 +1 capacity, but it’s a bit heavy when fully loaded, but heavy does not bother me.

ok i thought it was an extension. i forget if it's 8 +1 or 9 +1 but thats close enough.

mike

It has an extended (one-piece) magazine, not a magazine extension a la the 870.

Even though I'm more of an 870 fan, I have a 590A1 that is a great shotgun. (It is configured like the one you're looking at, but mine has a ghost-ring sight set-up.)

It is a heavy package - but IMHO that's not necessarily a bad thing for managing 12 gauge recoil in close quarters under stress.

mossberg will factory port/refinish it for 60.00

That's fine but, the Vang Comp specialty is back boring.

This patterns the shot better and reduces recoil.

They get 8" groups with 00 buck @ 25 yds.

I have had it done to many shotty's I've built.

Works like a champ.

300.00 +tax NIB

i got to play with lostwildcats a couple of weeks ago and a GOOD defense shotty is a real weak point in my collection right now.

what do you guys think?

military configuration? you mean the 590A1? if so, that's an incredible price for a new A1.

if it's the standard 590, it's not a bad price. mine was $279 + tax... it ended up being right about $300.

Talk me out of buying this shotgun

Cant do it. All I can do is show you what you can get if you spend DOUBLE your money.

Makes the 300.00 look pretty good

Why would anyone want to put a bayonet on a shotgun ?.

BECAUSE WE CAN !.

Buy it. Get an extra M7 or m9 bayonet. I know I'll never use it, but the idea that I'm not supposed to have it compels me to own one.

I have one with the ghost ring sights. It's a good slug thrower . Got mine used in like new condition . $225 a steal. $300 is a good price too.

USPSA 3-gun Heavy Metal division calls for a 12 ga pump without porting.

Already having a full blown VCS-870 in the safe I'd probably pick this up - as the advantege of the MILspec Mossy is it's beefy weight helping soak up recoil.

The military 590 is not even close to the civi one. No comparison at all, think FN M-16 and oly plinker or Hesse.

I belive only a few things, such as the metal safety, not a whole lot.

Off the top of my head - the bbl is heavier (thicker tube), parked instead of blued, and there should be a metal safety.

Speedfeed makes a shortened stock, and IIRC sure-fire has a model that works with the bayo lug.
The trouble is people buy the wrong one, and then bitch.

590a1 is parked and I don't see how they can make that barrel any heavier. It's a cannon already.

Some parts are metal instead of plastic, thicker metal in places, better inspection processes, wish I could remember where I saw it because it was pretty interesting. For 300 bucks I'd have to think about it too.

Metal (vs. plastic) trigger-guard as well AFAIK - or at least my 590A1 has a metal trigger-guard and safety...

ETA: Mine also does not have a heat-shield. I don't think I have a picture of it by itself, but it's the next to the last in this picture of my Mossbergs:

I dont think the military model has a heatshield. If it does, then all the ones I've seen have had theirs removed. They dont have Speedfeeds either.

I believe the military model has an aluminum/metal trigger guard, beefed up receiver, and I believe thay all have 18 inch barrels.

ETA: If you like the thing, then buy it. I like Remington 870s, but I wouldnt hesitate to pick up a 590/590A1. They are good shotguns, work very well, are easy to work on, and have plenty of accessories for them.

Get it!!!!
Link Posted: 8/15/2005 7:59:31 AM EDT
I have a 590 and it kicks ass. Works perfect, groups well (and I haven't even sent it to vang) - it has A LOT to do with what ammo you select, copper plated 00 buck sucked, Remington lead 00 buck works great, etc...

The only difference between the 590 civilian and military is the metal trigger guard / safety.
Its a fantastic combat shotgun, and I'd take it OVER a 870.

Link Posted: 8/15/2005 8:05:44 AM EDT
The only thing you need to do is order a bead night sight to go with it.

Get it for sure. My buddies 870 is very picky on ammo, while my other friend's 500 eats everything alive.

I wouldn't worry about the plastic safety or trigger guard much if I were you unless it's going to get slammed against rocks alot. My 500 has been fine for years with it's plastic guard and safety switch.
