I'm thinking I need one of the Pedersoli .72 caliber double barrel muzzleloaders. Home made black powder would cost me around $5-6 per pound. I already cast bullets so I could pick up a mold for the 550 grain round ball and cast them out of wheelweights near for free. Musket caps are cheap... And I REALLY wanna shoot something with a 550 grain ball at near 2000 FPS. I'm thinking this could be one of the ultimate "fun" guns. What do you all think?

A 54 caliber doesn't have that much kick. How bad could a 72 caliber be? I'd go for it.
FWIW, I hunt elk mostly with muzzle loaders. |

If there's anything out there that merits this............... you'd better pull both triggers at once. You might not have time to recover for a second shot.

It takes bigger balls to shoot a .58.
It takes really big balls to shoot a .72. Why not? If you got the coin and the itch for it; go ahead. If you stall & don't, you'll always wonder what you missed out on. There are plenty of big ass bad attitude boars that are in dire need of a .72" attitude adjustment.

Sounds like a good time.. I get a little hunting in, but mostly target shoot. Building them is what I enjoy most

Does anyone else make their own black powder?
How exact do you need to be when measuring the ingredients? Is it very forgiving? Do you grind the sulfur or charcoal your self (how fine do they need to be?) or buy bulk chemicals? I'm intrigued. |

I would advise against home made black powder, though. Not because of safety - contrary to popular belief, you can make it safely. I've done it. It's not near the quality of a good brand like Swiss or Goex though. It burns dirtier and doesn't have as much power, and unless you're set up to screen it to the correct grain size it's hard to get it consistent. If you go to www.powderinc.com and buy in bulk you can get black powder pretty cheap. I would use something like Swiss 1.5 in a gun of this size. That's what I use in my 45-70 and it's extremely accurate and clean burning. Also, don't use Pyrodex. A fine rifle like this deserves the real stuff. |

I shoot .69 caliber smooth bore now and it's a piece of cake. A double in .69, .72 or .75 would just make me giddy as hell so NO, I won't talk you out of purchasing such a double. In fact I encourage it.

The proper name for this double rifle is the Pedersoli .72 Kodiak Double Express. I own one. I stripped it down and finished it to look like the double rifle it should. It is heavy, paticularly in the nose, which makes me think the felt recoil will be minimized. Black Powder muzzleloaders don't recoil as bad as you think they might given their caliber and the nature of the black powder burn. Then again, I have yet to shoot my .72 Kodiak Double Express, which is disgusting considering the number of years I have owned it.
They are beautiful rifles. Buy one for that reason only. |

I saw one in the Bargain cave at the Kansas City Cabelas for $800 last year. I wanted that thing so f'ing bad. It was in perfect condition. Wife said no. Made me wish I was single.

Pedersoli .72 caliber double rifle is basically a rifled 12 guage.
Try this for an effective bullet http://www.leeprecision.com/cgi/catalog/browse.cgi?1284166408.4428=/html/catalog/blackpow.html#shotgun The only reaon I can think of to talk you out of one of these rifles is the cost. You can buy a Mossberg 500 rifled and cantilivered slug gun for well under $500. Load brass or plastic shells with blackpowder and a slug of your choice and you have a faster reload and one more shot. |
