Ok, been wanting a fun sport/defense rifle in 308.  Handled a Saiga 308 today and would like to hear why those of you have tried this rifle think I should or not get this rifle.

Thanks!

Love mine. Great rifle. As a warning, the stock trigger blows. But it's easy to convert.

I have scene then in the 4-500 $$ range . This is Cheap compared to a AR10 or FAL .

I have thought about them myself .

I would rather have the Siaga 12 ga first .

BUY IT !!!

I'm thinking of getting one as my first rifle, and I am just wondering, is it hard to get/find mags for it?

I've always kind of wanted one.  What ever you do, stay away from the DPMS Sportical in your search for a fun .308.

Bought my first and converted it to pistol grip.
Liked it so much I bought another and have kept it stock.

They are very nice rifles for the $400 that I paid for them a few years ago.
I see they are selling for more $$$ now.

it shoots good enough, and you know its going to bang every time.  I got the long barrel.

I have a converted one in .223. Damn fine gun, feeds anything, well made, accurate as hell.

How much for GOOD mags?

.308?

5.56?

7.62x39?  I assume for 7.62x39 that you can use surplus AK mags?  Or am I mistaken?

I like my 16" barrel model. It was very easy to convert to pistol grip configuration. It has never jammed with about 1k rounds through it. I've only shot it for accuracy at 50yds shooting various surplus 7.62 and cheap .308. Groups ranged from 2-4" using iron sights.

The one thing I hate about it is magazine cost. You're looking at about $40 for a reliable high capacity polymer magazine.

You USED to be able to get mags made by FBMG but I think they're out of business or such. Those were the cream of the crop as far as mags go.

Surefire mags are pretty good, just don't get the 25rd'ers. Stick to the 15 or 20rd mags they make.

I got the one with the 22" barrel (I have no use for a 16" .308). Left it unconverted. Bought a genuine Rooskie Dragunov-style stock for it, a railed polymer handguard, and put a Mojo Micro-Click rear sight on it (peep). Topped it off with a Com-Bloc side mount 4x scope and viola!, a "cheapo" DM rifle.

can someone expand on the legality of converting to pistol grip, particularly 922r compliance.

also, where to get the parts needed.

They work good. I wouldn't buy one, but I've already got a couple of .308's, don't need to and another.

I too was wondering the same thing last year and finally decided to pull the trigger on the 22" barrel, converted version, off the saiga-12 forum classifieds.
I got it for a good price by todays standards $400, and am glad I did it. I put some dark olive furniture on it and I really like it. It likes Port surplus 7.62 the best
and shoots about a 16" group at 375 yds. The conversion is a must for the best trigger. Get one, I would do it again.

I really really really wish they'd make one in 7.62x54r with a heavy barrel

If you go for 7.62x39 just get an SGL-21. Same thing, already converted, and basically guaranteed to be done correctly.

Parts count when converted is the same as a standard AK. Without a muzzle device you need 5 US made compliance parts. Standard AK trigger groups(3 compliance parts), pistol grips(1 part) and butt-stocks(1 part) will work. US made magazines have 3 compliance parts.

To convert pretty much all you have to do is disassemble the rifle, remove the trigger guard and plate, re-install trigger guard just behind the mag release, install AK parts and you are done. There are a few step-by-steps out there on the web.

I have both types of mags and I prefer the Surefire over FBMG.

I did a pistol grip conversion but then switched to a Choate stock for a dragunov setup

Old pic of mine... It now wears a trendy FDE finish and a VFG to alleviate the heaviness of the barrel.
