What am I doing wrong?  I get 13 planets in AI WARS with all the expansions (even prior to the expansions) and I cannot for the life of me survive.  They hit me in so many areas at once that I have to juggle forces around and keep garrisons that are lower than the incoming waves.  someone please tell me what I am doing so wrong in this game?

And it was level 2!

I only made it to the mecha-turtle in level 3 a couple times. Don't recall ever getting further, for all the time I spent on that game...

That part was easy, you just suck.  Seriously, this game is the hardest game ever.  It's on sale on STEAM right now for <$10 for the whole game and expansions.  You will be fucked.

The hardest video game currently is demon souls and its sequel dark souls. The Ai and enemy placement have outsmarted millions of players who usually just give up on the game.

Yes.  Demon's Souls was an amazing game and Dark Souls was a great sequel.  Both are very satisfying and I'm eager for another!

Actually I used to love Rambo on the NES. The trick was you had to draw a map as you went forward since the game didn't have a map for you (like Metroid, Kid Icarus, Goonies II, Blaster Master, Wizards & Warriors, etc.).

My personal hardest game was Top Gun on the NES. Landing on the carrier after the first mission was a once in a blue moon thing.

First off, I am far from an expert. I have only played a few games (though they are many, many hours long) in AI Wars but I can usually get further than 13. Plus I don't have the expansions. And its been awhile. So you might very well know more than me. But here it goes:

Expand quickly but carefully. The more planets you have conquered, the more ships they will send at you. So don't build on planets that aren't overwhelmingly beneficial.

Try to find planets that are hubs and stack it with tons of defenses. Otherwise you will be spread way too thin.

I love Raid Starships. They are very fast so you can use hit and run tactics on enemy planets before a full scale assault. Plus their speed can really help you defensively; they can arrive quickly in any area that needs serious help.

Much as I love micro, the game is much more geared towards the macro scale (the main exception for me being Raid Starships). This isn't to say that microing is bad - it will save many of your ships, particularly in the close battles. But generally, I seemed to be more effective when I focused on resource management, production, and strategic planning rather than always spending time on the most efficient tactical maneuvers. Later in the game, you are almost always fighting and you need to focus on the big picture instead of constantly being absorbed in each battle. I'm sure better players can do both but I couldn't. There are lots of automated options to choose to help keep you from getting bogged down in the details.

Sorry if these were very elementary for you but I didn't see anyone else respond so figured I would give it a go. That game is awesome and finally winning is an awesome feeling. But dang, it can be really frustrating too.

PHHHT.

Nothing makes a game hard like WANTING to be able to play it, but the controls and good guy AI working against you while the super advanced enemy AI tears you a new asshole.

Especially such a well done game!

I am pretty sure I played and beat that one and don't remember it being insanely difficult. I mean it's been a LOOOOOOOOONG time. I remember getting wiped out a few times, but nothing that was as frustratingly stupid as some of the games on the NES which confused insanely retarded difficulty with increasing gameplay length.

I got pretty far, but the game got overshadowed by quake and tribes.

The problem was the shit good guy AI, and weapons jamming.  The AI good guys would just let themselves die.  I guess it wasn't so much the difficulty, but the frustration.
