don't get me wrong here, i applaud anyone that helps out in any way the people affected by the huricane.

i especially applaud the efforts of texas, and the city of houston in general for opening their arms to the "refugees".

my question for you is this: do you honestly think they are going to leave? ever?

they are now living in texas, the children will be attending texas schools. i gotta think it's only a matter of time before many of these folks say, "...f*ck it! NO will never be rebuilt. we're staying right here."

they will apply for welfare in texas, (and in the current spirit of charity) probably qualify somehow. they'll start draining the economy, and get a solid foothold in your cities and towns with the next generation (that'll probably be attending school there anytime now).

so what say you? am i right? am i wrong? do i need more foil? or did texas (and other surrounding cities and states) just get a demographic enema?

I agree with your asessment. I think they will stay, apply for welfare, and all the while trash the city and state for not "taking care of them" good enough.

It'll happen. All I've hears so far is how awful they are being treated (no mention of the fact that they made NO storm preparations at all....)

It's going to get ugly here. Oh, and also watch for Houston's crime rate to take a quick jump.

well, like i said, i definately appreciate what everyone is doing (and i think the whole nation does), but a lot of the dirt-bags we've been seeing lately are going to become your responsibility... we've already seen some car jackings and the likes from out-of-towners.

oh well. you take the good with the bad i guess.

you do what you can, and hope [in the end] you do more good.

I suspect that once they figure out that they aren't going to get all of the free long term handouts that they are used to, they'll start saving their money for a bus ticket to some other state that's more accomodating to them.

LA should reimburse TX for the extra welfare $$ its gonna cost them
Link Posted: 9/2/2005 6:40:21 AM EDT
I have relatives in North LA and they are wondering why everyone is being shipped out of state I know why, cause LA. wants someone else to pay for their residents.
It will end up costing us $$$ for someone else’s problem.
The problem I have is that we are seeing a bunch of kids registering for school out here that are not even living anywhere around near here.
The taxes we pay for the district is high already and now we will have to hire more teachers to cover these kids. Not to mention the scam factor, the people who are now using this event to have their kids go to nice schools that don't live in the area. Houston said they would provide for these people, let Houston I.S.D. deal with them.

i was just looking for opinions of those who are closer to the mess.

A few evacues from LA is nothing compared to the 1000 a night illegals for the last 20 years from the south.

No doubt in my mind Texas will be exemplar in dealing with the disaster.
Link Posted: 9/2/2005 6:54:59 AM EDT
A lot will stay and a lot will go back. I figure about 50/50. A considerable amount here now left before the storm hit and are staying in hotels until the money runs out. Those are the type of people that will stay and rebuild and become tax payers. The gang and criminal element may stay, but at the moment they are unarmed. The PD has been confiscating firearms as people go into the Astrodome. Most relinquished their weapons voluntarily. The criminal type, even if it gets here, will have to compete with local criminals. The local thugs ain't going to be to crazy about this.

The non-working welfare ones are the ones I'd be concerned about. They'll drain money until someone says enough, which won't happen.

LA can't take them because, where are they going to house all these people for months?

My wife tells me whe's seen a lot more traffic in our little town of 4000 in the middle of nowhere. Should be interesting.
Link Posted: 9/2/2005 6:55:56 AM EDT
They won't go back unless .gov gives them a ride and a place to live. I'm afraid Texas now has a bunch of new permanent residents.

I heard one person on the local news channel that said straight out she came here because they told here in LA. that she would get free food and housing for 6 months here in Houston.

Houston can absorb a fair amount. With all the construction going on here and the future construction that will occur in the Gulf region that will make for alot of jobs. I bet things work out just fine after the short term problems pan out. The main problem I forsee coming will be the class action lawsuits against the .gov for "not doing enough." It will be a replay of the slavery reparations movement.

To take that idea a (bad?) step forward.

We've had homeless people wandering around for a long time. We've had illegals roaming around for a long time. We've had .gov housing around for a long time.

Is this the point when it becomes socially acceptable for the .gov to build refugee camps for the refuges? Will the camps once established be torn down and the people dispersed after a time. Or are we going to see more and more of these 'low costs' containment areas spring up here and there.

It might be the beginning of 'refugee-America'.

I live in Houston and it pisses me off when I see that fat bitch on TV complaining that all they have to drink is "water, water, water."

But then I think she's probably just the 1 retard out of 100 so that's why she's on TV. I hope.

The hospitals are getting slammed - I know I work in one.

Reading this thread made me wonder:

What would you do if it were, say, Nebraska (for sake of argument), which had to evacuate?

Generally white Americans having to evacuate to neighboring states.

Would you feel the same as you do now about the Katrina evacuees?

Would you pony up and help with the releif effort funding to rebuild, even if it took years?

Sorry to break this to you, but .gov isn't going to foot the Katrina bill by itself, or depend on other nations generosity/compassion, or the Red Cross for that matter.

This will trickle down to all of us, in one way or another.

I think we are going to have a spike in local crime. Local hotels are already filling up, and we are a long ways from Houston. My first weekend back on night shift working the streets is tonight, and we are starting off on Labor Day weekend, with the area filling up with refugees. The good news is that refugees who made it this far will probably be the ones with working vehicles and money. Our community adds about 5,000 a year, anyhow, mostly middle to upper middle class. We definitely have the housing available, though a large amount of it will be out of reach of the average NO resident. I do expect to find folks from LA in the parks and rest areas when I am crawling the streets at two in the morning this weekend, hunting for car burglars and DWIs. We'll see.

We Texans are good neighbors, and we will certainly help out, but I don't have enough street-level information yet to make a really good call on this. I think we may well have a very interesting weekend, though. Interesting in the Chinese sense, at least. I am glad I have such great people at work.

I work in a town of about 12,000 and we've taken in over 2,000 people. Most of them are the ones that were smart enought o leave before the storm, though. Our community has accepted that we don't know how long we'll have them here. We are generous but don't shoot at us and don't bitch because you're not getting lobster and steak for dinner.

Here in San Antonio we already have too many criminals and too many welfare recipiants.

A large perctntage of the good, law abiding, hard working people from NO left before the storm. Many are now living in hotels here in Texas. We welcome them.

Most of those who stayed behind, but not all, are the welfare recipiant, rule violating types. We don't want them. We don't need more criminals and we don't need more greedy welfare recipiants.

The working people from NO will probably go back home after this is over, but I suspect many will eventually move to higher ground.

The welfare, rule violating types will stay where they end up if: 1 the welfare benefits, etc are good, 2 there is a plentiful supply of victims for their crimes.

Their children will enter our classrooms disrupt the educational process and cause our children to learn less. Our local school district had a representative on tv yesterday telling us that our elementary school teachers could expect two or three refugee 'children' in each of their already overcrowded classes.

I for one, don't want the rule violating, welfare dependant types here in Texas or any other place on this planet.

Note: edited to tone down how I really 'feel'.

FWIW the term refugee is incorrect. According to the UN, a refugee is someone fleeing religious or political persecution. These people are victims.

if a caravan of 1.5 million of the blackest, midnight black, african black people showed up in my town and took up residency, i wouldn't give 2 and a half turds, provided they were respectable, hard working, individuals.

on the other hand, if one of those looting gang-bangers showed up tomorrow, i'd be pissed.

it's about the character, not the color.

that's why i started this thread. it seems like a lot of the bottom-of-the-bucket types are going to be rounded up and bussed out to other areas of the country. your reward for helping many of these people will be an an increase in taxes (to pay for more welfare), an increase in crime (from the imported welfare receiving crack-heads), and another tax increase to fight the crime resulting from the criminals you are already paying to live there.

well, i guess the good ones now have a good place to live, and the bad ones now have a good place to get shot.

ETA pretty red letters.

The Houston Mayor is a liberal pansy who won't do shit unless they happen to get a flat on the highway, in which case they'll be towed no questions asked.
