For those of you who bared with me a couple of days ago when I was asking about Kias, forgive me for another similar thead.

As I was explaining that discussion, I said that I'm a Honda guy at heart.  However, there's nothing in Honda's current lineup that "does it" for me.

I'm a small econo-car-aholic.  I commute 120 miles round trip to the city and need something small and reliable.   I'm not a lease guy, I buy them and try to drive them forever.  I drive cars until they basically cost more to maintain than a new one would be.   It's getting to that point now with my '97 Altima.

I'm currently broadening my search criteria from the big three "Honda, Nissan and Toyota" to also include lesser priced asian offerings, such as Kia, et al.

Looking now (very casually, as in online only as of yet) at the Suzuki Aerio and SX4s.  For anyone who owns one, works on them, or whatever.  Are they any good?  I like the features and I like the prices.  But I don't know much about the reliability.  Let me know what you think.

I had an Aerio, I didn't really like it so I traded it for a new Honda Fit and I couldn't be happier. I get 42MPG on average, and it has plenty of power for the freeway.  It's also suprisingly spacious, I'm a big guy (6'2'' 235) and it is really comfortable. I didn't really have any problems with the Aerio, it just got crappy gas mileage for it's class.

LOW,

What kind of mileage did you get?  Did you have 5 speed or Auto?  My wife and I only drive standard trans, never automatics.

I missed your KIA post so i'll add my input here.  I drive 120 miles each day myself. The KIA Spectra that I use for this task has performed flawlesly.  At 90,000 miles it got a new timing belt even though the original was in near perfect condition.  It has 138,000 miles now. The rear brake shoes still don't need replacing. The front pads were replaced once.  it has the original plugs and wires. I change the oil every 5000 miles.  The only problem so far is the console lid hinge broke when I leaned on it real hard once and the check engine light came on twice to prompt me to change the transmission fluid.  Next week, I will look into trading it for a Sorento or Sportage.

Thanks Panega.  A spectra (possibly the 5) is what I was looking into but the consensus on here was that they were crap.  I'll have to rethink that, but I do really like the idea of the AWD on the SX4 and I have a Suzuki dealer literally a stone's throw from my house.

The Aerio was a 5 speed, and I averaged 27mpg. The Fit is an automatic and has just as much power and gets 15 more mpg on average.

One thing that is pissing me off about these cars, as I research them, is that they don't seem to come with a remote fuel filler door release.  In other words, anyone can just open the hatch, put in or take out whatever they want.  Seems like a simple thing, why can't they come with that feature?

You can buy locking gas caps.

I drive a Nissan Sentra '05.  I get on average 33 MPG with a 5 speed.  It has been very reliable, but it does have a problem starting in the summer if the AC was left on.  This is only on the first try.  Overall, a very good car.

I know but that's a bit of a pain in the ass for something that seems so simple...just a cable.  Does the trunk not have a release inside the car?

I only buy/drive 4-wheel drive vehicles, so I love the idea of the suzuki.  My first new car was a Suzuki Samurai, and I didn't have a single mechanical problem with it.

I've thought about the SX4 for my wife and I, she wants a Subaru or VW.  We both commute 54 miles/day 5 days a week, so my 19 MPG 4x4 X-Terra sucks a lot of gas/cash.

The SX4 only gets about 28 mpg. The Spectra gets 34 and the Fit gets 38.

28 is about what I'm getting in my car now.  It would be nice to get a bit more but the SX4 is just too damn cool.  You can change from FWD to sensing part-time AWD to Full time AWD.

I half expected this to be a 'I caught my girlfriend in the Kia doing the gear shift!' thread.  I could have sworn the title said dildo in it.

That out of the way...

My dad has been driving Suzuki's since 1987.  He has had only 2, a Samurai and a Sidekick.  He drives about 100 miles round trip to work, and his Sidekick gets around 28 mpg I believe, possibly higher, I can't quite remember what he said last time it came up.  Both trucks have been dead bang reliable, and amazingly had no maintainence other than oil changes performed on them for well over 150,000 miles each.  Even the brakes lasted to 100,000 miles!

Not much input on Kia's other than the fact that Kia built the Ford Festiva's.  I had a Festiva way back, and it was a great car.  Utterly reliable, and got 44 mpg.

A cable-operated fuel filler door takes just a couple of seconds to pry open. As protection against fuel theft, it's just about worthless. OTOH, a locking gas cap takes some time and effort to defeat.

Yup, can't say much about Suzuki cars but the 4X4's are tops.
I've got a Samurai and a 2000 Tracker. Both are solid runners.

No need to defeat a fuel door.  Around these parts there are easier and faster ways to steal your fuel from you.

None of them involves the fuel door or fuel filler cap.

Won't be posting on an open forum, no need to give out ideas.

On another note, why the hell would you need a releasing fuel filler door?  And why would it matter on a vehicle purchase, that's not even on my list of options I would want, probably wouldn't buy it if it did have it....

Maybe it's because I have always driven hotrods and pickups (All have been Chevy, Ford, or Dodge), but why can't you flip the damn thing open yourself, when you get out to fill the tank?

Good Lord, that's awful.  My '98 Neon DOHC manual trans gets a reliable 33 mpg with mostly highway driving.  If I keep the speed down, I can break over 40 mpg.  Most of the time I'm in a hurry, so I push the speed quite a bit.

It gets that 33 mpg at about 75 mph average.  That's with 150 horsepower and a 7.5 second 0-60 time.

This is perplexing to say the least.  Just got back from browsing the Suzuki Lot.  It seems that the cars equipped with Automatic Trannys get getter gas mileage than the standard 5 speed trans.  This flies in the face of anything I've ever known about cars.

The sticks got 23/28 and the autos 24/30.  Why and how is this possible?  A little disconcerting because I only like to drive stick shifts and even though I realize this car is at the bottom of the class for fuel consumption, it still is a consideration of mine.

you like hondas?

why ont try a fit? these a great cars. decent milage, better than most. seats fold all kinds of different ways for neat gear stowing, and they supposedly beat z06 vettes in quick lane change tests for one of the major mags..

i have a nold CRX HF and im considering getting a fit to replace it. only problem is they are hard to find.

I do like Hondas, I used to have a 2001 Civic that was great.  Unfortunately it got wiped out a couple of years ago by a truck.

But the look of the Fit just turns me off for some reason.  And the new 8th Gen civics are horrendous looking.  The should have left them alone.

That seems to be the rule for just about every modern carn these days. Automatics have gotten much more efficient thanks to computers. Do a comparison on any brand you care to check, the MPG will be, if not better on automatics, at least as good as the manuals. I'm a die-hard, fanatical driver of manuals, but I'll have to admit that the MPG advantage of manuals is pretty much gone.

While not quite what you are looking at my Aunt and Cousin are driving Grand Variats. Fuel milage has been good and they have had no mechanical problems with the vehicles. The cousins husband also has one of the small wagon type vehicles and has been well pleased with it.
