After the urban survival topic, anyone ever think of a motorcycle to bug out on? I have looked at the Ural, at www.ural.com. THe Patrol version with a sidecar and both rear wheels driving? If they made it 900 cc's I would be taking out a loan.
Any thoughts on it, mobility, able to weave around obstacles, carry a few weekes of equipment. Even get a gun mount for the sidecar.

Not real impressed with the sidecar concept. Personally, I'd chose either a good sport utility ATV (racks can hold a lot, more nimble yet stable) or a big-bore dual-sport bike with a large-capacity fuel tank (maximum agility to negotiate unimproved/destroyed terrain as quickly as possible at the expense of load-carrying capabilities). But that's just me. YMMV [;)]

The Urals are WWII BMW's technology. They are very needy as far as maintenance is concerned.
I think if the sidecar was your want, I would get a Velorex and a 650 or so street bike to drag it. You can put a better rear tire on it for dual use if you want. The only thing I would do is find a points ignition bike. For me, a Triumph 650 tiger would be a good candidate.

We'll if you really think you need to a "bug out" vehicle, I'd say you'd probably be better off with a 4 wheeler type and some type of trailer.

As mentioned the Ural is basically a 1940's design. I'd hate to have to bet the bank on one thought they would be fun to ride around the other 99.999999999% of the time when the SINHTF. But then again, so is a 4 runner.

that sounds interesting.. really i was thinking of building an ultralight aircraft. (not legally an airplaine, but a "vehicle capable of leaving the ground") its an interesting concept.

The story I heard was if nuclear SHTF
An electromagnetic pulse will put us all on foot,and the guy in the 64 Falcon will still be driving.

Comute to work and if the SHTF war/earthquake.TEOTWAWKI etc.......
You are good to go....where you gonna go is another story..but if you got a place to go...this should get you there...with or without a road
Had to sell mine three years ago for health reasons...wish I hadnt..its a tall bike though..good for at least 6' plus
For the EMP scenario put your spare electronics in a FARADAY cage...course you will need one at work and at home and anyplace you dont want to get stranded at.....

Keep a saddle and bridle handy. How much gas do you think will be available or how much will you be able to carry? Spare parts? If push comes to shove, you can always eat a pack animal.

This topic has me thinking of a Paris to Dakar BMW motorcycle.

Other than that, a big off-road Yamaha thumper four-stroke would be the ticket.

Kawasaki KLR 650. Tough, cheap, and eay to work on. Lightweight enough at 300 lbs if you get rid of that big black 30 lb breadbox they call a muffler and install a Supertrapp.[;D]

One of the Suzuki DR models. If you want to be able to ride two up and travel at fwy speeds then the 650 is it. It is very road worthy, an excellent commuter, and not a bad ride on fire trails. But it is too heavy for serious off road riding.

For serious off road use and also some street ridine then go for the 400.

Both are one piston 4-stroke bikes and are bullet proof.

The ONLY survival motorcycle is a ROKON...
Two wheel drive..Power take off kit ..gang reels...plow attachment..log skidder...generator...broadcast spreaders...this is the CJ of motorcycles.The wheels are hollow and sealed allowing the ROKON to float if need be...or can be filled with fuel to increase the range...They run on standard honda or briggs and statton engines that you'd find in any tiller snow thrower heavy lawnmower, some have some have kohler and chrysler engines that are larger...easy to find AND inexpensive to maintain...they dont go fast...but they don't stop for much

shooterX308, the Army and Marines thought enough of the KLR-650 to adopt it for use. I'll agree .... it's tough, cheap, and easy to work on, but it's one HEAVY SUCKER.

And I like it quiet, so the Supertrapp is not an option.

I have a KLR-650, it will take me most anywhere I want to go on the planet at reasonable speed. BUT.. I want something "barely street legal" with more power and lighter.

Recommendations?

The Honda dirt bike makes more sense than anything else. It will take you just about anywhere.

Yeah, the "dirt bike" does make the most sense.EXTREME mobility plus mpg a+.The fat semi-solid tires on those Rokon's AB23's also would be my preference.But if the SHTF a simple pedal dirt bicyle would be almost Ideal.

I'd go with a with mid-bore bike, specifically a Yamaha WR426, and add the necesary pieces to make it street legal, myself. It's a better bike offroad due to it's being an MX derivative instead of more of a playbike like the Honda and Kawasaki offerings.
