Don't laugh: Hyman's Seafood.

Not an upscale restaurant...but it just doesn't seem like a trip to Charleston is complete without a stop by that little place.

Charleston City Museum for its gun collection.  If you buy the pass, you can visit the Taliferro house across the street and one other historic house.  The United Daughters of the Confederacy have a nice old museum in the old Marketplace building.  Visit the Citadel too.  The Hunley is in North Charleston, but it's open only on weekends.  Also go to Fort Moultrie, a National Park Site that interprets coastal defense.  The famous Seminole chief, Oceola is buried there.  The old courthouse is worth visiting.  It's a Revolutionary War site.  There's also a carrier (Yorktown?) that's out there too.  Of course, you should visit Fort Sumter.  You shouldn't miss the battery (a public part at the tip of Charleston).

Dive the Cooper River.

If you've never been on one, the Yorktown is berthed there, that's pretty interesting for a half day trip.  There's a sub there also.

We went last weekend.  Check out the ship and downtown.  We went to the Citadel.  Go to charleston Crab House.  We went to the one on St Johns Island and it was good.  Hopefully the smoke clears up by then.  It was very smoky during our trip.

Eta.  Folly beach was nice too.  Get there early as the beach was filling up quickly at lunch.  The Charleston Crab House was on the way to Folly.

USS Yorktown isn't great. Not bad, but not great. If you haven't been on an aircraft carrier, it's worth the time to see it though. Don't bother having lunch in "The Chiefs Mess" It's isn't actually the chiefs mess and the food is not good.

USS Yorktown and other exhibits. Unless you spent previous time on a modern carrier, it will be worth at least a few hours. That ship is full of history I'd recommend donating a few dollars any way you can to support the upkeep, even if it means marginal food. The sub anchored along side is very cool, as well, along with the Vietnam-era display on-shore. I didn't have time to see Ft. Sumter, Wish I had.

The Citadel is interesting, as well. My cousin in the Corps was married there in the chapel.

Isle of Palms was nice, although I was there in the off-season.

It's a beautiful town, I'd love to go back sometime.

Take the horse-drawn carriage ride through the historic areas of downtown. You'll learn a lot about the city and its history. Have lunch at Shem Creek Bar & Grill in Mt. Pleasant. The food there is GREAT.

Sullivan's island is a MUCH nicer beach than Isle of Palms. IoP is pretty touristy, Sullivans is a little more remote. although if you want to be around lots a people, beach rental stuff, restaurants on the beach whatever, IoP might be better.

Ft Sumter is pretty cool. As mentioned their is tons of other military stuff to see.

Get some good seafood too. Avoid the tourist traps by the beach or near the downtown market. Protip: if it has a gift shop dont fucking eat there. Check out the google user reviews, yelp, and urban spoon for guidance, usually pretty good.

I'm actually going to be in Charleston this weekend, helping my brother move. I don't know if i will make it to the beach but i might hit the downtown nighttime entertainment establishments. The women in Charleston are beautiful, and half the dudes are fags so competition is low. On the other hand its a rich city... so.... hopefully some nice young lady want to go slummin

It's too hot for the horse deal... just stank the whole time...   Take a trip to the FT if the weather is nice and like others have said, if you haven't ever been on an aircraft carrier then head over to the USS Yorktown for the day.  They also have an old sub and a few other boats.  Once your done with dinner, museums and the walking head over to ATP gun shop and range in Summerville and rent the wife/GF an MP5 for a few full auto mag dumps.

I would skip Ft. Sumter and go to Ft. Moultrie on Sullivan's Island instead.  It's a lot cheaper since you don't have to take the ferry, less crowded, and has a lot of cool exhibits from the Revolutionary War though WWII.  The Yorktown is very interesting, you definitely don't want to skip that.  I really liked the haunted jail tour in downtown too.

fuck Hyman's. go to the Wreck on Shem Creek, or RB's, Reds if you want a bar setting. All on Shem Creek. Way better food. OP PM me if you would like. I have lived here(Charleston) my whole life.   If you fish, get a charter, the billfish bite is crazy now. The Plantations along the Ashley are cool. So are the forts. As you know we have pile of historic stuff here.  All are worth seeing. Its hot as shit, been 100deg or greater.

Edit: I see your goin solo. go to Reds on shem creek. lots of tail there that needs to be slayed.

Go to Goose Creek, get drunk at Pappy's bar. Stay until it closes then wander to the other side of the building and feast on the breakfast buffet. Actually I haven't been there since '93 but it was fun then!

This isnt the best idea in the Charleston summer heat. Not a very refreshing smell. The Charleston market downtown is cool, Good shops and places to eat. Check out the Battery and just drive around the see the historic houses in the Battery area.

used to live off Rifle range road in Mt. Pleasant some time ago...
If it is still there, Red's Icehouse on Shem Creek is a really great place to hang out, listen to some live music and drink some cold ones, the food wasn't to bad back in the day too...
Also Vickery's on Shem Creek has some really great food.
There is a lot to do, go to the Battery, take a carriage or walking tour, and have a beer at the Bull and Finch, eat at Tommy Condon's, and stop by Wet Willies in the evening for some tasty, frosty adult beverages.
Isle of Palms has some great restaurants and live music venues, the Windjammer always has something going on, whether it is beach volleyball tourneys, or bikini contests, or some of the best music in town (Except for the Music Farm downtown on Ann St).

Charleston Crab House, good food, good people (John is awesome), James Island is the place to be IMHO!

Folly Beach, need I say more?

Ft. Sumter is also a place you need to visit, provided it's not 149 degrees with 600% humidity!

Wanted to do the whole Cooper River thing (Dive the Cooper) but haven't as of yet, and hope to when I head down there in August.

Head up to Calabash, you won't be disappointed, and if you've got the time, check out my old haunts in Southport and Baldhead Island. If you're able, take the ferry over to Baldhead (from Southport), and tour the island, check out the turtle conservancy, eat dinner (Shoals Club) and take walk on the beach at sunset, talk about postcard material!

I was there on the 13th.  $5 to park, $16 to take the tour.  It is in rough shape compared to Pensacola Naval Air Museum, Wright Patt Air Force Museum, Port Hueneme SeaBee Museum, or the Fort Knox Armor Museum.  I'd love to see some ROTC cadets in there to freshen it up.

There is some good history there and just walking on the deck showed how big the balls of the pilots are.  She's only ~60' wide.

Check your map and look for the tour signs, the upper areas were hidden behind some of the displays in the hangar.  Watch your head.  Kid in front of me konked his pretty hard climbing a ladder.

Also, if you decide to go on the WWII submarine, the hatches are kinda small.

Down the road from the Yorktown on 17 is Red's.  Good sights, drinks and SheCrab soup.  RB's next door had some watered down drinks, food was decent.

If you want to eat the best wings in the world go to Wild Wing Cafe.

Mt. P - best food and scenery*

WW Downtown - Okish food, great scenery*

N. Charleston - Great food, okish scenery*

*Although it's been a couple years since I've been so things might have changed a little.

Ummmmm, Wild Wings!  It's almost worth moving back just for the wings despite the traffic on I26, the hellishly hot/humid summers, and the 24" spinners on 1980's POS cars.

And they have real meaty wings, not those anemic sparrow wings that most bars serve, and a entire menu of flavors too, ranging from "you pussy get some real wings" to "Hiroshima on the surface of the sun on a Parris Island summer day" hot.
