Study: Unwed Mothers 'Tend to Not Marry Well'
By LiveScience Staff

Women who have children out of wedlock are about 30 percent less likely to get married than childless single women, according to a new study.
When unwed mothers do marry, they are more likely to land husbands who are significantly older and less educated than those of women who don't have children.

"It's more difficult for unwed mothers to get married, and if they do, they tend to not marry well," said Zhenchao Qian, associate professor of sociology at Ohio State University.

More than a third of female-headed families with children live in poverty compared to only 6 percent of married couples with children, Qian said. Marriage may not help unwed mothers economically, however, because their partners tend to lack education and are less likely to have opportunities for good-paying jobs.

The study drew from data collected in the Current Population Survey between 1980 and 1995. The sample included 102,722 women aged 18 to 34.

Their results are detailed in the current issue of the journal Social Forces.

I wonder how many millions they spent on this study to find out what was obvious to the oblivious.

Huh.

Just think - someone got paid to research the issue and come to that conclusion.

Seriously, what self-respecting man wants another man's bagage?

Chances are if you do buy a "package deal" then you'll have to put up with the asshat biological father at some stage of the game. Who needs the trouble?

I don't get it If I was single I'd definitely be looking for a woman with 2 or 3 kids with 2 or 3 different dads, it all the rage nowadays

I'm going to study whether older less-educated men tend to not marry well.

Not to mention the strong Darwinian urge not to waste resources on another man's offspring.

Of the folk I know who were unwed mothers, they indeed tended to not marry well. Kinda like not being able to be picky, and they needed some man to support them and their chillun(s).

Ahhh... unwed mothers. Getting knocked up is not necessarily proof of poor decision making skills. Let's track them and their rug rats and see if they do anything else well.

I don't think the study author (or anyone else) is shocked by the finding. "Proving" things that are considered obvious is actually a valid (and valuable) form of research.

Problems is.

If you pass up all the women with children looking for one to marry without children. You could go to your grave single these days. There simply are not many available.

That's debateable.

I personally believe that proving the obvious is a waste of time, for the most part.

I once lived in a 'science' world. I found it to be borderline absurd.

Of course, that is only one person's opinion.

YMMV, of course.

Does anyone else realize that as more and more women become sexually promiscuous there will be more and more single mothers, and that these single mothers will vote for a nanny state? As George Washington said, our system is meant for a moral and religious people, it is wholly unsuitable for any other. We may test that statement in a generation or two.

Of course, don't be silly.

Everyone has their own personal rules of dating. A couple of mine:

1. Females with kids want something--money or free child care (me)
2. Females that can grow a better mustache than I can are off limits

I dated one woman -- ONE -- that told me from the outset that her kids were not my responsiblity, they were hers. She never spoke of her kids when we were together, and had no expectation for me to play a father or a childcare role for her kids.

She was indeed a wonderful lover, and the last woman I dated. Oh well.

As proof that exceptions to the stereotype exist, this is my 'unwed mother' and her son:

As she hit her late thirties, she still hadn't met anyone she wanted to spend her life with, but she realized that her time was limited, so she went ahead and had a baby.

I admit that I wasn't entirely comfortable with the concept, but then I got to know her.

She's the best mother I've ever seen, and he's a happy, healthy, well-adjusted kid. I frequently find myself just watching her in wonder as she interacts with him. She supports herself, owns her own house, has two college degrees and a couple hundred thou in the bank.

Rather than vote "for the nanny state", she's a Libertarian. Rather than demand support from the kid's father, she sends him money every month - just because he doesn't have much and that's what she's like.

She's got so much confidence in herself that she doesn't give a fat rat's ass what anyone thinks of her and her lifestyle.

She's the polar opposite of my ex, who was one of those pillar-of-the-church types, and a total hypocrit.

If any of you can find a girl half as good as this one, have the wisdom to put aside your judgementalism and grab her. Your life will be wonderful.

So the key to a successful marriage is solely money?

News Flash: young unwed mothers tend to marry men with low education levels, low intelligence and low incomes (if any income). Film at 10:00.

People tend to marry others having similar education and intelligence levels.

Blinding Light....Thunder Clap...Revelation...young unwed mothers tend to have low education levels and have low intelligence!!! And, tend to have the corresponding low incomes.

Gimmie the Grant Bux.

Show me the MONEY.

Hand me that Ph.D., behind the back please.

(There are exceptions of course. But, those cases are, well, exceptional.)

Is this the one with the nice boobs we saw the other day?

And are you sure that hanging with you makes her an exception?

Kidding. I know 2 women that are exceptions(exceptional) myself. I wish I could say that they were my sisters, sister in laws (ALL of whom are not exceptions), but I am glad to call them friends none the less.

I have a great proposal for a PhD Thesis in Human Relations.
Topic: An Exploratory Statistical Empirical Approach at determining the most effective sexual position for a woman to obtain an Orgasm, and whether or not alcohol and drugs also have an desirous effect

Grant Proposal: The Author proposes to personally conduct an experiment involving a randomly picked sample size of 300 (not to mention Good Looking) Coeds from Major Universities. The sample will be divided into 4 subgroups, with 3 groups being fed a drug and the fourth group being fed placebo.

In order to have a control group. The Author will feed a subgroup of the sample of coeds a drink of non-alcoholic beer before engaging in said debauchery. Needless to say the Author will need sufficient funds for cost of Liquor,Marijuana and Cocaine.

In order to induce sufficient imoral behavior from the sample population the author also proposes to show pornographic movies, in a dimly lit room with rock and roll as background music laced with subliminal messages.

Do you think I have a shot at getting funding from the National Science Foundation?

Or how about the National Endowment for the Arts. (I could tape the acts and create a photomosaic of clips).

If the Republicans scream about it being a waste of Government Money, I am sure that they could be won over by marketing and selling a Photomosaic on the Internet with a percentage of the proceeds going to ....uhh...."campaign donations" to members in the legislative bodies.
