Let me guess: They think "the rich" that should be taxed is anybody who makes more than what they will make when they get out of school...so long as it doesn't affect them.

They can have a free education:

RAF will teach them airframe maintenance, servicing of jet engines, radar operations.
British Army will teach them heavy equipment operation
Royal Navy can teach them boiler operations.

To be honest I don't have a problem subsidising further education or British kids provided:

1)  Those kids are British
2)  Those kids are working to attain a degree in a subject that will help further British interests in science, engineering, medicine, manufacturing and industry.
3)  Those kids are required to complete their degree, attain a high standard, and actually go into a field of work for which their degree is relevant and pay their taxes in the UK.

Giving every soap-dodging metrosexual teen-angst ridden tosspot with a sock on his head a free pass to do a degree in expressive dance and "pube art" while they make a twat of themselves at every socialist march going is something that rightfully should receive no free hand outs.  If they want to become a useless pain in the arse then let them finance their asshattery for themselves.

back in the 70s/80s when it was "free", we had to have a minimum # of A-levels to get in and had to maintain a decent grade to not get kicked out. a couple of my mates weren't able to got kicked out. obviously the standards to get into Lampeter differed from Imperial, but it wasn't just open doors

Same when I was there.  I worked 4 jobs to pay my way through University and had to maintain grades throughout.  I had a great time, don't get me wrong, but I learned to work hard and play hard.  Even so I still incurred some student debt.

When I left university I was unemployed for 1 week, got a job working in retail and another in manufacturing on a factory floor to pay my way before finally breaking into the career of my choice for which I had studied.  I paid my debt off within the first 2 years of employment.

There's still a lot of good kids coming out of Uni with very relevant degrees, but there has been an inordinate amount of dross being churned out who are saddled with huge debt and useless degrees because they were stupid. They have no means to pay it back because they cannot command a salary close to what they need so they default and never pay it back, all the while blaming others for their stupid mistakes.

Meanwhile there are plumbers, electricians, brickies and other trades who can earn more in a year than most university graduates can, because there is a shortage of people who make stuff and fix stuff.  

We have essentially created a tranche of people who are next to useless, all because the leftists decided it would be good to open up education to everyone.  Unsurprisingly the further education establishments who were creaming in the money at the taxpayers expense as the nation's morons flocked to do a degree in David Beckham studies (not kidding - Staffordshire University offered this ) or similar.
