Was the step really worth the massive loss of bed space??

I had a Ford Ranger several years ago that had a step side bed. Looked ok but the Ranger didn't have the biggest bed anyway and the stepside shrunk it to the point where it would just about hold a shoebox before it was full. I personally wouldn't have another one.

Our family grocery store had one we used for home deliveries. The step was ideal for that. That was one of the sweetest jobs a teenager could ever have.

The old ones look cool, but they're pretty dumb and are ugly as shit on anything newer than about 1980.

For those who don't understand this, in an old school stepside, you could still put a sheet of plywood between the wheel wells and, unless you specifically got a short bed, could close the tailgate too

I personally don't care for the way they look. I will never buy one.

some people like them - more power to them.

I like the look of mine, of course I don't expect anyone here to consider it an actual truck

Link Posted: 1/19/2015 1:16:23 PM EST
No more useless that the 5 foot beds on the majority of the trucks today. Blows me away seeing a mega cab Dodge / Ram with a micro bed on it. Crew Max Tundra with a 5 foot bed when you can get the regular short crew cab with an 8 foot bed just doesn't make sense. While at the Houston Supercross a few years back(where people who own and haul dirt bikes in their trucks go...) I asked my Toyota marketing rep buddy why the hell they can't at least put a standard 6 1/2 foot bed on the Crew Max and he tells me that no one wants it. I told him Toyota was just damn stupid. Later that evening they had the Toyota Tuff Block challenge where fans get to race to fill the bed of a Tundra with the foam haybales. Funny shit when they went to shut the gate and the damn thing fell off. Laughed my ass off and snapped a couple pics.

I never had a problem stepping up on the tire/wheel to get stuff out of the bed.

Stepsides are cool. Plenty of room on the steps for toolboxes and such. Good way to keep things organized and still have room in the bed.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Fucking piece of shit douchemobile Japanese fag truck...
Link Posted: 1/19/2015 1:23:53 PM EST
It made sense on old trucks if you were using it to haul gravel or something. I'm thinking late 60s Dodge 3/4 ton. Also makes a nice place to permanently mount fuel cans, spare tires, high lifts, etc where they won't get in the way of the cargo.

I would argue that that truck was a final gasp of American greatness. The government left a loop hole in the regs you could drive a truck, that truck, though.

i liked mine when i had it. was easier to get in and out but hardly ever used the bed so loss of space wasn't a bother.

not to mention when your hands are full gives you a spot to put stuff down to open the door.

I must be the only guy who has ever shot rabbits from the bed of a truck at night. The stepside is far from useless.

I like it. 90% of Brodozer owners would be better off and happier with a truck like that if they were honest with themselves.

What's not to understand? They are there to help you step on to make it easier to reach into the bed from the side. They aren't there to look cool. They are there to perform a useful function. If you can get by with a little less volume in the bed they can be quite convenient.
Link Posted: 1/19/2015 2:21:59 PM EST
It never bothered me. I could still fit a sheet of plywood on the floor just fine.

I sold it though when gas was over $4.00 and it just sat in the driveway, couldn't justify payments when I wasn't using it.

Much like the "new" Camaros, Mustangs, and whatever the Dodge turd is, they are crutch for the designer out of ideas.

Ghey.

Edit: I take that back.

Old step sides look cool but most of the modern ones I've seen have all sorts of pin striping, gothic letters and gold trim. Ghey.
