What is the purpose of having one on a 4x4 truck?

To stabilize the steering.

Damps the squirrely steering.

My 4x4 ZR2 has one. I think it's a basic Rancho RS5000. My steering has been acting funny and I think it might be bad.

All Steering components are tight. Whenever it's windy I'm all over the road. It don't matter if it's a lot of wind or a slight breeze. I can literally feel the front of the truck being steered by the wind.

Then some parts of your suspension and/or steering are worn. Or you've changed some geometry

Death wobble is not normal and can be fixed. A steering stabilizer to mask it is a poor choice.

Increase the toe-in.  1/4" is not too much.  I'd rather wear the tires than deal with the death wobbles.

After viewing some videos on youtube, I don't have the death wobble.

Mine is bent.  I don't think it does anything.

A bad steering stabilizer wouldn't do that.  A SS dampens the effects of the suspension cycling on the steering components (bump steer), and isn't meant to preventing wandering.

Yeah, I fixed the problem last weekend, I was just joking about the whole "death wobble" deal on Jeeps. Replaced some worn bushings and balanced the wheels and it fixed it.

Blazers also have steering box issues, look into that.

Replaced it last year with a PSC Performance Steering Gear Box.
