Professional athlete... pumped up with steriods, growth hormones, pain killers, and who knows what else. When is the NFL going to have a meaningful drug policy, testing, and enforcement?  That is probably what help him in his crash though.

When I was in high school and playing football, I was encouraged to take steriods from the coaches by indirectly comparing my weightlifting charts to those that gave into the pressure. They would steer you to the "team doctor" who would find some reason to prescribe the juice. That was over twenty years ago. It is probably worse now.

Riding without a license is extremely common.  Generally, I'm okay with it as the only person you're going to hurt in an accident is yourself.  I see them like Hunter Safety Courses.  Sure, they're nice, but common sense and experience will win every time.

On an aside, I question Roethlisberger's taste in bikes.  There are much nicer options out there.  The Busa is an outdated, heavy, and ugly platform.  Different strokes, I guess.

In my state, and many others I'm sure, you're perfectly legal to drive on a permit.  You can't learn how to ride with someone on the back, and that would be a sure way to wreck, trust me.  A lot of people renew their permits many times before taking the driving test.  I personally learned on a sport bike (CBR600F2), but I did go take the driving test part after the permit expired.  The driving test was very easy IMO, even for a n00b.

Oh, and I never wrecked either.

I'm not saying this clown didn't ride like a maniac, or that he rode very well, but a lot of things are subjective in this case.

Do people who do have licenses fall? Yes

Can a Twenty question test could of prevented this? No

Could that oh so Thorough Riding exam prevent this? Hardly

Stupid for not having a license..Yes. But until the penalty  for riding without a license changes, people will continue down the scenic route. It's cheaper to pay the fine 3 or 4 times than to wait 6hours in line and pay your 20bucks.

It amazes me that this guy having an accident brings out the
jealosy and hate in some folks.  Say it with me - accident.
He was going the speed limit.  There is no mention that he was
drunk or high - he was travelling from one radio interview to another.

You'd think Ben and his gang beat up on someone's favorite other
QB and his gang - oh wait, likely that did happen.

That would be a great theory if it wasn't wrong. I rooted for the Steelers. However, Ben was a dumbass because:
#1 He was riding without a helmet. Where did his injuries occur? Oh yeah, the head.
#2 He wasn't properly licensed in the state of PA.

That's not jealosy or hate. That's pointing out that he was stupid. He was as stupid as many other idiots in this country. He just has the "misfortune" of being famous.

If he name was John Smith, my reaction would be the same. He's an idiot. It just happens, in his case, he is a well-paid idiot.

Dport:  The guy is 24 years old.  He won a SuperBowl.  He is - immortal.
I can remember being 24 and immortal too.  Or so I thought at the time.

Stupid would be thinking he would get into an accident and still not wearing
a helmet.  Thinking oneself immortal, and not wearing a helmet - I don't
think stupid is the right word.  Maybe delusional is a better word.  Or
maybe it is just being 24 and immortal?

Anyway, that's my take on it.

If so. do you realize how many folks you are claiming are stupid?

No it would not be arrogant, but yes, if you ride a motorcycle without a helmet, you're stupid. You may have the right, in certain states, to ride without one. That's a personal choice. However, it still can be stupid.

On a different slant I don't see the actual license or the test as being the guage as to weather someone is going to be a responsible rider.  The act of taking the time to take the test and get the license is equally important.  By taking the test and getting the license you exhibit some responsibility.  So getting the license is more of a common sense test.  If you are not responsible enough to take a test or get a license my bet is that you're much more prone to getting hurt or getting in an accident.  Yes it was an accident and maybe the outcome would be exactly the same if he had a license but from a statistical standpoint I'd bet that many more unlicensed riders get hurt than licensed riders.

I ride my bike to work at least 2 - 3 days a week and put ~ 5k a year on my bike.  I've only been riding for two years but I do AGATT, All Gear All The Time.  If I get killed so be it but I also have my family and friends to think about and can't see why I wouldn't protect myself as much as possible.

IMHO

I am a huge Steelers fan and what Roethlisberger did was completely stupid.  I don't have a problem with him riding a bike but I do have a problem with not wearing a helmet.  In PA you have to be a licensed rider for 2 years or take the MSF course before you are permitted to ride without a helmet.

she probably does. and considering her age, she may well have some vision issues. one thing about pa drivers licensing that always seemed odd to me is that regardless of age, vision testing is not required for renewal. recently a guy in my area, that was declared blind enough to collect vision benefits since the late 80's,  ran over a cyclist 5 ft off the road.

I rode many miles in the 'Burgh back when I was in college.
It's not the easiest place to ride; heavy traffic, some streets have trolley tracks embedded into their surface, there are lots of those bridges with the grating that make tires "squirm",  and of course, all of the intersections have a layer of oil from cars stopping at the lights.
I remember it well and I went down a few times to, usually from going too fast.  I set it down in an intersection once in the rain when a car turned left in front of me just like Rothlisberger.  I ended up on my butt under the front tire of the car (stopped); better that than through the windshield, head first like our fair SuperBowl warrior.  One can easily get killed that way.
I walked away from it.

In MA, the requirement for a M permit is a 15 question test.  The permit is good for two years.  It can be renewed and the only time are you required to take a riding test is when you go for the license.  The only limitations are you can't two-up or ride at night.

To obtain a motorcycle license in Pennsylvania, riders must first get a learner's permit, which requires a $10 fee, a vision screening and a written test. The permit is valid for one year, during which a road test must be passed to obtain a full motorcycle license.

Only after two years of possessing a valid license is riding without a helmet allowed. That restriction is waived if the rider takes an approved safety course.

They must have changed the requirements since I got my class M license (1995).  Back then, if you had a valid "car" license (usually a class C) you sent them $10 and that was it.  Your permit was good for 3 months but no vision or written test was required.
