I have a 95 Chevy plow/yard truck- 6.5 Diesel.  Total beater.  It hasn't run in a year and I'm having difficulty starting it.  Turns over but won't fire.  Despite the factory warnings, can I use starter fluid if I don't use the glow plugs?  I am not worried about the longevity of this truck.  Just needs to get through the winter.  Thanks for any advice...

Yup. Give 'er a small squirt. Too much can crack pistons. I had a KW with a 60 series Detroit that was addicted to Ether.

Crank 'er and just a little tiny squirt through the air intake.

Then keep your diesel warm so it doesn't goo next time and avoid bio-diesel like the plague.

For an engine you care about, avoid Ether and bio.

Don't do it.  You WILL damage the engine.

Try the gasoline trick?

We used to start the HMMWV's by soaking a rag in gas & wrapping it around the air intake so the fumes got sucked in.

Try not to blow yourself up.

Generally what I do is take a rag soaked with some gasoline on it and hold it over the air inlet, the vapor is enough to get it started without a run away situation from too much starting fluid.

ETA Damn, beat by seconds

Try WD40 as 'starter fuild' for most diesel.

I have always been told/taught not to use starter fluid in ANY diesel that uses glow plugs or grid heaters (cummins). The plugs/heater cycle, ignite the starter fluid and the engine goes KABOOOOOMMMMMMM.

This. It can mushroom the glow plugs then you may need to pull the heads to change them.

If its not starting chances are that some or all of the glow plugs are not working.  Don't fuck around with small squirts.  Crank it and hose the intake until it starts.  As long as the glow plugs are not working you won't hurt anything.

No, I have been around/owned Diesels for a long time and no one with any knowledge uses WD40.  As well competitive diesel truck and diesel tractor pullers use regular ole starter fluid to get things going.

If you use the starter fluid in a Cummins with grid heaters make sure your grid heaters cycle first before spraying any starter fluid.

It can be done safely just use your head.

This works too, but in the cold, ether still gets he job done better.

Exactly, this is why you only squirt it in Detroit's and never the holy grail, CAT

a small squirt will not hurt , just remember diesels get addicted to that stuff .

Honestly you might want to look at some glow plugs for it.
