Hi all. I am usually pretty good with computers, but I am at a loss here. Not sure how, but I seem to have some adware/spyware on my system. If I go to sites like ARFcom, Google, etc. that do not have popups, yet I will recieve 1, sometimes 2 popups. Things ranging from buying a camera to who will I vote for, etc. The title bar of the IE windows always beings with "--- -", no quotes. I have check my task manager, nothing seems out of place that I can see. I have run up to date versions of Norton Anti-Virus, Ad-Aware, SPYBouncer, SPY Remover, etc. etc. Like 7 of them. Each one finds something diffrent, I tell it to remove it, but the issue remains.

I did check the source of some of the popups, and the only info I could pull from them was one that had a link to ads.clickagents.com, and one to offeroptimizer.com. Other than that, I can't find anything out of the ordinary.

If you could offer any assistance, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Would you happen to have something called "webrebates"? I had a terrible popup problem (before I switched from IE to Firefox), and I pushed ctrl-alt-del to see the list of running programs and found that program. I later found out that that program was causing the popups.

If you do have it, you are SOL. I did everything imaginable to get rid of it. I deleted the folder. It came right back. I uninstalled it. It came right back. I went to the actual website (which really made me feel dirty) and got instructions on how to uninstall it. The instructions, of course, were false.

Screw Ad-Aware. It's one of the most overrated spyware programs I've ever come across.
Others do the job better and faster, and with less goddamn crashes.

Google for cwshredder, hijack this and Spybot S&D. Also spyware guard provides good realtime protection, and spyware blaster makes registry changes to prevent alot of crap from getting installed.

I use spybot s&d, spyware guard (runs real time) spyware blaster and hijack this.
I rarely ever get some kind of warning or spyware alert using these programs. Try them out.

you may have a cool web variant, try finding cwshredder and run it, it might find something the other mentioned programs do not.

Stop using Internet Explorer, that is why you are getting all that adware/spyware. Try using Firefox, I have been using it for 3 months and have had no pop ups or spyware at all!

dl spybot search and destroy from CNet.com
run the Update option after install.

If it's anything like what I have, spybot and ad-aware will not help at all. I ran them both three times, and webrebates is still there.

I have always run Pest Patrol, and thought it good.

Unfortunately, last week I got a malware called VX2. I could not remove it. Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D etc all downloaded and all did not work.

No removal instructions helped for manual removal.

I did an FDISK, Format C:, and clean install of XP. And now, I use Mozilla Firefox.

I lost two months of data, not to mention my weekend.

cw shredder and hijack this is the only way to remove those kinds of pop ups.......youll never find the exec file looking for it yourself....its buried deep in windows........go to zdnet downloads and get highjack this and cwshredder.

Don't use IE++

I've been using Mozilla's stand alone browser (Firebird, and then Firefox) for a year now, and will never go back.

Run a sweep with Spysweeper, finds a ton of stuff, even in the registry where a lot of these are BURIED

IE Restrcitions works well on hijacks and redirects

Download Knoppix, Morphix, or one of the other LiveCD Linux distributions and learn to use that when connecting to the Internet. You don't need to install it to your hard drive, it runs off the CD-R that you burn.

Since it never references the hard drive, even if a virus somehow infected the running copy, the virus would be eradicated the next time you power off or reboot the machine. Also, most viruses and network worms target Windows.

Knoppix is probably a little nicer, but doesn't work on machines with NVidia chipsets or video. Morphix includes drivers for NVidia products.

If you want to save stuff to your hard drive for permanent use, you will need to learn some simple commands, like "mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1" and "umount /mnt/hda1". If you want to use a USB keychain drive, use "modprobe usb-storage", then "mkdir /mnt/stick" and "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/stick".

Using Internet Exploder for anything is

Spybot, AdAware, CWShredder won't work once the malware gets into it's self perpetuating mode. I finally had to reformat, reinstall XP, and then the first thing I did was d/l Firefox. Not a single problem from then on, even AFTER surfing porn....that's the REAL test, lol.

You Re-installed XP? Hmm, bummer. Should have installed LINUX! And VOILA! No more spyware problem..
