Needs more ham. Maybe that's what's wrong with it...no pork. |

Quoted: Split pea soup is awesome! This... X1000. Love the stuff.

Total prep time on doing it yourself is like fifteen minutes, and the recipe I use makes an absolute shitpile of the stuff.

It sucked, and sucked hard...no meat=fail! Well, no wonder. First off, you got to have ham or pork in it. Second, it's much better hot and fresh off the stove –– leftover soup doesn't come close, I would think canned is about the same. |
|
Used to think that. Had some fresh made by a legit chef. Was pretty scrumptious. Had cubes of ham in it.
Baker dude, post your recipe Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I'm a pretty good cook, I'll try it from scratch...but from a can it sucks. I'm just trying to build my TEOTWAWKI stash. |

To everyone saying 'ham' you have clearly never had REAL split pea soup, which has BACON in it....
|
|
I was going to say how wrong you are, but it looks like everyone else is straightening you out.

Good homemade piss-pee-poop... err... "split pea soup" with ham is among the greatest of things in the world.

I can my own, it's awesome! Do you need a certain recipe for canning it, or will a pressure canner take care of that? Because I make a mean split pea soup (with ham/ham-bone) It's affectionately known as 'booger soup' in our house. |
|
I love anything with peas in it esp split pea soup so I disagree.

Home made is awesome. Canned = Never had home made...but canned sucked balls. |

Well share the recipe already! It's pretty standard, but the addition of the ham bone does it good. One big onion, celery stalk and carrot (all chopped up), and sauteed for a minute or two in about a tablespoon of bacon grease. Add a pound of split peas, 1 qt water and 1qt chicken stock (fresh is best), then a bay leaf. The local ham store sells what they call "ham bottoms" (they're spiral sliced hams that have been used for ham sandwiches, and these are the leftovers), so I toss one of those in there too. Bring it to a boil, then cover and simmer for 1.5-2 hours. Remove the bone (trimming any ham that hasn't fallen off), and you can call it done. Some people take a stick blender to it, but I like it chunky. |

I even eat it when it's not raining. from a can
Hated it when I was little though, used to add fucktons of ketchup to it |

Needs more ham. ...and less can. Split pea soup, properly made, is downright delicious. I make about 6 quarts of it at a time, then freeze it in serving-sized ziplock bags. It heats up in the microwave great, and can be eaten as-is (but I sprinkle cheddar cheese on it), or spread on toast (the split pea soup that I make is thick). Yum. Cost-effective, and nutritious. |
|
It's getting to be soup weather here. I can't wait to make a big batch of split pea.
|
|
Canned? Wut's so hard about making it yourself? If you don't like the flavor, you haven't added enough ham.

Homemade with big chunks of ham.
Dipping fresh sourdough French bread in it is pretty damned good too! |

The Andersen's spilt pea with bacon is really good. Only canned pea soup I eat.
Of course nothing is as good as home made |
