lets say the Shit is hitting the Fan in your local city, you are buying a gun for defense why not go with the AK, reliable dummy proof and for defending yourself in a urban area do you really need to make the longer shots that the AR is good at?

AR handles better and reloads faster but I have to say the AK is probably better for getting you out of shit.

badguys shooting at you from their car, no problem for 40rds of 762x39

Rather than buy an AK, I'd just buy more ammo for the guns I already have.

7.62 is heavier than .223 in the same amount of bullets.  I'll take the .223

yes, the AK is the best SHTF rifle, rugged, & reliable, low maintenance

Board with a nail through it.  Or a broken off whiskey bottle.

Seriously, an AR. I can hit stuff with it.

na, I'd rather have my FAL than the AK I had, only if I couldn't have my colt

Harsh language usually works.  Or a jar full of rancid urine.  Oh wait, you said 'firearm'.  Then it would definitely be my 10/22.

The idea is logical, but then again its what your good with. If you're proficient with the AR then stick to it, AK stick to it. The gear queers might not back it cuz they're pretty lenses get scratched up and they cant see nothing but KISS = survivability in most cases. Have an AR that runs 100% with nothing to break on or in it? Great...AK box stock? great too. Shotgun? Sure. .44 mag revolver? Hey bring it along. *shrugs* I've had both as well as a FAL. Bigger and heavier (deeper penetration) ammo doesnt mean better necessarily. As someone pointed out weight is a bigger issue. People are going to run no matter what your shooting at them. If they're stupid enough to stay Im not going to worry about my bullet getting through their cover, Im going to worry about my bullet hitting exactly what it's aiming at. Now if your argument is simply based on gas system then yes the AK is more simple and less likely to have problems than the other two. Its a monkey gun. A monkey could successfully care for an operate the gun. But i'd rather be 2lbs or more lighter as well as 2in or more accurate. (Yes i realize there exist more accurate AKs than 3 moa)

In that situation I would opt for a 30mm Bofors in a vehicle mount

Get both.  That is what I have.  AKs have there strong points as do ARs.  What you have with you at that moment is what works best.

I love the AR and imho it is much more fun to shoot and would rather have a M4 than a AK in combat but I am just saying for civilian needs AK has alot of advantages.

Good luck finding any ammo for it.
