So was Stanley Kubrick.  Doesn't diminish their greatness one iota.

I did not know that.

He flew over 80 missions in a B-17.

Impressive.

Very related to OP;

Scotty (James Doohan), was in D-Day; landed on Juno Beach.

What I want to know is whether on not the young woman survived and if she did whether or not they hooked up.  That would make for a good movie.

He was crazy, smart and pretty good at writing fantastic stories.

Maybe later in life he went crazy but from the 60s through part of the 80s he was the bee's knees.

Then somehow he along with a few others put together an amazing team that put together the best series on TV in history spanning 4 series, hundreds of episodes and millions of new fans.

Gene Roddenberry was a notorious womanizer.  He constantly cheated on his wife - Majel Barrett - and basically slept with every female cast member on Star Trek.  If he left his seat to go comfort an unaccompanied female passenger, he was just trying to get some pussy.

Knew he'd survived a plane crash and was a bomber pilot, but I didn't know the details.  Cool.

Maybe he should have stayed in the cockpit and helped the pilot instead of hitting on some skank.  That certainly explains some of things they did in Star Trek like sending the captain of the ship down as part of away teams.

J/K cool story

Actually, he went into the LAPD before becoming a writer.

For a bit of insight into Gene, watch "Chaos on the Bridge" on Netflix.

It's a documentary, hosted by Shatner, about how The Next Generation came to be.

Why was the co pilot not helping the pilot out in the cockpit with what was  clearly an emergency?

And if Lucy hadn't loved the idea of Star Trek and went to bat for the show it would have never been picked up and put on the air.

Other sources indicate he was a third officer or a deadheading pilot and thus he had no cockpit duties.
