As I went out the door the other day, I saw some wood chips near the base of the tree by our driveway. As I got closer, I could see that something had scarred it or chewed on it.

I started thinking maybe a beaver had come up the creek from the Bourbeuse River, which isn't far away. When I got where I could see the damage I knew it wasn't from a beaver, but for just a moment I was puzzled as to what could have done it. Then I saw the hack marks, and I remembered that while I was in the garage the night before our ten year old son took my hatchet to go play in the yard.

I had to go through the whole don't-destroy-things-that-aren't-yours bit.

I've never had to deal with my kids trying to chop down a tree --yet.

my dad cured me of that when I was quite young....

He had me cut down all the saplings on a piece of land he was clearing! Several blisters later I knew that hatchets were teh suck...

Chainsaws are much better!
