Really cool.  Wiki says they have even flown up to 9 hours at night.

The cockpit looks really small, are they sitting on a drivers seat/toilet combo?

9 hours at night?

I am pretty sure it just flew constantly for almost 5 days.

Neat milestone...

But aren't those speeds fairly comparable to lighter than air craft?

Why not put a bunch of solar panels on a blimp?

Helium is not renewable and hydrogen is iffy.

Yeah it is.   We just haven't learned how to mine the sun!

Ahh.  I thought he was saying it was parking after 9 hours.

That's simple. You do it at night.

I'd guess you have to dodge the headwinds at those miniscule speeds.

Amazing bit of technology rolled into that.

Electric airplanes are really whats needed in GA right now.

I think they stole the design.

I can't believe Google or SpaceX hasn't thought of this. Shows the old adage, "Money don't make you smart," is true.

Those could only fly for 14-15 hours.

They also set the record for the slowest flights since Zeplins and Hot Air Ballons.

Heading to bank with business plan now.  Wish me luck!

The motor, controller and battery technology is now light years ahead of where it was.  That airplane was built with Pentium computers.

The first motors were 1.5KW and pretty amazing at the time.  I can now order a motor that is more efficient and twice as powerful for less than $100.

At the time a lithium polymer batter would do good to have a 10C discharge rate.  IIRC the latest batteries will survive 70C discharge with 140C burst.

The problem with solar is you have to scale to a certain size to make it work, but at those sizes the battery/motor technology starts to drop off.  Gas just makes more sense.  For now.

It was great technology, but this new bird can stay over a site for days and carry a couple hundred pounds of equipment.
