The real word for what we call Liberals is "progressive". Progress of humanity, civilization. Constantly improving and correcting injustices, imperfections, and the government as the logical tool to accomplish those improvements and reforms. I'd be a Liberal too if I believed government was effective in solving things like poverty, or that all injustices from racism to lookism can be corrected by the government. I would even be a socialist if I thought it actually improved more peoples' lives than it hindered or harmed.
But I'm NOT a progressive, because all the evidence I see is that the government screws up everything it touches, socialism ruins countries, and human nature is more or less immutable.
So what I do is look at what's been established as good, pragmatic, useful, beneficial from history and our institutions, and seek to keep and learn from those institutions, principles and lessons while trying to keep the government as limited as reasonably possible, so as to limit its capacity to damage an individual's ability to shape his life from well-meaning but clueless politicians and bureaucrats.
These are the fundamental political beliefs we choose from.
