With more hate then praise being bestowed upon "American Sniper" what was the last war movie you actually liked?

I don't stay too current on new war movies. Last recent war movie I watched was AoV. That was only because a buddy on leave brought it over.

ETA: and were you in the military or not?

I went and saw American Sniper at the theater last night, I liked it. Granted I don't nit pick every detail about movies. Before that the last war movie I liked was We Were Soldiers, before that one Black Hawk Down.

I like them all. The arfcom movie critics are retarded and nitpick everything to death. I ignore the critical movie threads.  Blackhawk down was the last great one I saw.

Not sure if it can be classified as a traditional war movie but ZERO DARK THIRTY was a great movie.
What made it better was the fact that I had watched the CIA documentary before seeing the movie as that gave you a real understanding of who the
characters really were.

I know Band of Brothers isn't a movie, but it is the leading candidate by which all others should be measured. SPR is a very close second though.

ETA: Although casting "Ross" as Captain Sobel was a fucking epic fail IMO.

We were soldiers, Blackhawk Down, and (I hate to say it) Saving Private Ryan are probably the best that I can recall.    I'm so jaded against war movies these days, it's hard to interest me due to all the derp.

Yes, some folks are very critical of movies that follow books. I think more so then just a stand alone movie. I don't personally expect a movie to follow a book exactly. As long as it stays true to the big points I think a little freedom to make it "work" on film is allowed. Not saying they just a free pass to completely change stuff vital to the story.

I'll have to watch that one again.  I enjoyed it, but it just seemed like something was missing.

I enjoyed Lone Survivor, but it had lots of holes in it.

SPR, BHD and WWS are great.  Band of Brothers and The Pacific are good too.

I would like to see a good VN movie about SOG or LRRP's.

A good movie on SOG would be epic!

Like maybe, Jerry Shriver

Or perhaps A Gentle Proposition could be made

Yeah, I get what you're saying, maybe you're right.  I just couldn't help but think he was still in "Ross" character mode.  He probably is just can't act like any other character.  :)

GP is what has me in the mindset.  I've read a couple of similar ones that were recommended by Amazon, but they almost suck compared to GP.

BOB is great.  I just watched the first 8 episodes this week,  need to find so.etime this weekend for the last 2.  Yes I have the metal case addition and did not download.  The pacific is good also,  but i think BOB is a little better.  I am looking forward to the next series that they make.
