That's a good quote.
It says that we are a melting pot and "America" is constantly changing. It says that immigrants should not enclave their cultures. It says that certain ethnicities shouldn't hold on to a culture long lost for the sake of being "special" and exclusive. No black culture. No white culture. No Muslim culture. No Mexican culture. ONLY AMERICAN CULTURE. That means when a new group arrives, they change a lot and America changes a little. |

Note the conditional portion in the first sentence: "if the aim of that retention is cultural balkanization". Having multiple cultures within one country is not a good thing and is something that America has largely managed to avoid. There may be subcultures, but they are never large enough to threaten the cultural stability of the nation as a whole. Any subcultures that grow that large are quickly co-opted and assimilated. |
