The RCA/R10 is the current shipping model (hughes has been discontinued). I bought one last month at Best Buy for $100. Got my $50 rebate today. Can't beat that - $50 total out of pocket.

I've tried others and now believe if it doesn't say "TiVo" on the front, it ain't worth sheeeeit.

Should call DirecTV and see if they have some special offer, you might be able to get one for free.

If you are a long time DTV customer then you should call Customer Retention (not the regular customer service) and tell them your DTV-Tivo died and you are looking into an HD-Tivo solution. Tell them also that you are looking at your local cable company and Dish (do a bit of research and know what they are offering) for comparison. If your local cable company offers a free HD-DVR with digital cable tell that to the DTV rep. There are people getting the DTV HD-Tivo for $300 and then getting a $300 credit back to their account.

If the first rep says no, ask for a supervisor and try there. You should be able to get the HD-Tivo for a large discount.

MUCH more info available here in this 60 page thread from AVS Forums. Try starting around page 55 or so for the most recent info.

UPDATE:
Found this in one of the posts dated 9/15 so it should be current:
-----
If you call the retention line and ONLY this line will you be offered the deal price. That number is here is the # u need to call:

it is the customer retention line for DirecTV... 800-600-8977
Tell them you want to order the HD10-250 Receiver for the special price of $299.00 + $100.00 mail in rebate....you will also receive a FREE 3LNB DISH (if u need one) AND FREE INSTALLATION.... they will explain the rest. They even offered me $5.00 off the HD package for 6 months .. so i am getting that for $5.99 AND...I am getting Showtime FREE for 6 months and am paying $2.00/mo for HBO ...
THIS IS THE DEAL OF THE CENTURY!!

My TV gets treated to one of those surge protectors that disconnects the power when the surge ability is used up. Most do not. It sounds like a small bomb when they disconnect. Very funny in the living room. My Sat dish gets treated to a UPS as well. It keeps them safe.

Monster Power Centers are good! Not the power strips, but the big ones. Haven't had any issues since going to them. I have 2 HD DirectTV Tivos and you will like them

I too have Direct TV DVR. I came home one day and all my recorded programs were gone. No big deal to me ,but try telling a 2 year old that Thomas the Train isnt coming on today. Direct TV customer sevice SUCKS. I got absolutley no satisfaction from them. Luckily the box still worked (they wanted to charge me to replace it). Direct TV is highly NOT reccomended. On the other hand, how did I ever live without recordable tv? I might give up the microvave first.

For a man on 21k dialup...Is there any info for Dish?

1GR, call dish to cancel, tell them you are going to directV, recite the quote from above.
as a 10 year customer, with bills paid on time, they WILL deal. They did for me last year, it's cheaper to keep us than get new customers.

For what it's worth, check out www.weaknees.com if you ever need to upgrade your Tivo. Great guys that really know their stuff. I have a set of hard drives big enough to last me into next week. If you know that it's your drive, they can sell you a preformated drive.

I have a junk directivo I will give you if you pay shipping.
Maybe you could use it for parts or something.

I believe the tuner is hosed up, so the other parts maybe ok.
It hept freezing up, It was the 3rd reciever DTV sent me before I got fed up and told them to hit the road.
It is a Huges sd-dvr40
If you want it send me an IM and I'll get back with you when I get back from my training this week.

I have done it...got them down to $99.

I want it free dammit, like the new guys get!

If you can get the dish hi-def DVR(942 IIRC) for 99 bucks, that's a really good deal.

just order a new hard drive for it. Weaknees.com can probly help you out. My Hard Drive went on my Pioneer Tivo DVD recorder and I ordered a new one and now I have like 500 hours or something rediculous. All you have to do is unplug the old HD and plug in the new, then restart and redo your setup. And forget about it.

Edit: I see others have beaten me to it!

I just called and got a DTV rep.

That sucks. . .

I did read last night where DTV is getting pissed and thinks people are abusing thier system. I figure if it's their policy then I am just going by their rules, not abusing anything.
