So about how long would it take for a pack of unopened cigarettes to go bad, or go stale?

If it matters they are Camel Menthol Filters.

Just light one up. If it burns up in 5 seconds, it's stale. If the tobacco literally falls out of the tube, it's stale. If the stores are closed, and that's all you got - they're perfect.

I found the pack unopened left in a jacket pocket I haven't worn in at least a year. I didn't want to throw them out.

Yuck camel menthols and any menthols are just plain gross. Cowboy toothpicks. The post whore Subnetmask is right, if it is beyond stale, been exposed to high humidity, hot dry conditions it will literally fall apart in your hands. But that doesn't mean you can't just dump the tobacco into a tub and put a piece of bread in there, then re-roll with fresh papers.

But menthols are just nasty. gross.

They should taste fine for around 3 months/year. They should be smokeable for atleast 3 years.
If you take one out and it fails to lite or falls apart, you know your fucked.

Ever had a Nat Sherman Mint? 2nd best cancer stick I've ever had. Only better were Davidoff Magnums, which I believe Davidoff is nolonger willing to import lest they be exposed to litigation.

Put them in the freezer. They will last a lot longer.

whenever they get dry--so dry that they get holes in the filters/paper

Based on the smell, imho, they're bad before they're even packaged. =)

Many moons ago when I was a boy scout, we would go on campouts. Sometimes we would get C-rations. They had a pack of smokes in them. We would smoke them. They were made during WWII. This was in the 70's. Do the math.

Now you know they are a little stale when you light them and have to blow out the flame that stays lit on the end of the cig.

There are many different levels of bad.

So how long before a pack of smokes will go bad?

When they target the children, or so the politicians tell me.

I have never had a pack of smokes last more than a couple of days

Well I tried em and they were fine, maybe just a little weak, but still a decent smoke.

There are many different levels of "stale."

1940s era "luckies" that burn like cannon fuse are at the extreme end of that.

One of the tricks I remember is that you soak the end you are going to light in spit… The steam from that redistributes down the whole cig and they burn at a normal speed.

You might as well smoke a dirty sock.
