For no particular reason the other day I was just thinking about this to myself.

Say you got someone on the ground, you grab thier arm and then stomp on it hard enough to give them a compound fracture. How physically difficult would it be to tear thier arm off. Would it be something that was possible for the average man or woman to do. Or would you have to be a particularily strong individual.

depends on if you have a machete or axe handy

I like this thread.

depending on the situation and what kind of person you are. There are ladies that have lifted cars from adrenaline rushes, I am sure given a similar rush, you could rip someone's arm off relatively easily
Link Posted: 1/20/2006 8:31:52 AM EST
Only Chuck Norris has that skill!
Link Posted: 1/20/2006 8:32:59 AM EST
Just back from the DMV, are ya?
Link Posted: 1/20/2006 8:33:50 AM EST
Probably not as hard as unscrewing someones head off and shitting down their neck.
Link Posted: 1/20/2006 8:33:51 AM EST
Bah Ive done that before its over rated
Link Posted: 1/20/2006 8:36:02 AM EST
I guess you haven't read "In The Company of Heroes."
Link Posted: 1/20/2006 8:36:46 AM EST
We should do an "ARFCOM MYTHBUSTERS".

But, instead of fabricating dummys to test, we just actually kidnap someone and experiment on them. Most people have two arms, so two tests per victi....uh... test subject.

Let's say 6 tests for a good base.

If it's worth ripping their arm off, it's worth shooting them.

Ask the wolf from The Howling! (1 or 2.. dont remember..)

Would you use a FULL POWER shot?

You do realize that bone is not the only thing connecting the arm to the shoulder right? There is also a significant amount of muscle, cartilage, tendons, etc that hold the arm together. In fact, separating the bone from the shoulder would actually be the easiest part I think. I really don't think its possible to simply rip someones arm off, unless you are some gigantic hulk.
Link Posted: 1/20/2006 8:58:43 AM EST
It would be very difficult, if not impossible. I've seen them torn off by motorcycles & car wrecks, industrial machinery, etc.

ZootTX hit it on the head. The shoulder joint actually is held together by a tough mess of ligaments, muscles, and tendons. If you had a chainsaw, no problem. Barehanded? I have a hard time believing it.

Zombies can do it fairly easily.

Hard to say, but I remember laughing my ass off when my TI said that to the guy in front of me. Laughing was not the right thing to do because the TI then proceeded to ream me a new one.

Good times..... good times...

They had to use horses to do that in the middle-ages.

what about pulling off someone's ear?

For someone like me, easy...............for someone like you, not so easy.

They have to be wearing a shirt that says PETA or WAR IS NOT THE ANSWER or KERRY EDWARDS or NO BLOOD FOR OIL on it.
Link Posted: 1/20/2006 9:32:46 AM EST

So how difficult would it be to literally rip someone's arm off and beat them with it?

If the jackass 2 cubes down doesn't take Def Leppard off 'repeat', we're liable to find out.

Ask this dude:

Link Posted: 1/20/2006 9:55:57 AM EST
Depends on how muscular the person is that your ripping the arm off of. I'd say probably pretty hard. Have you ever tried ripping a steak apart from each end maybe a couple times harder than that, also have to factor in the ripping of the leathery streangth of the skin.

yeah but if you had them laying on the ground, put your feet on top and bottom of their arm. bent over and stretched with all your strength in your legs and back and arms.

Pretty easy id imagine.

Well now that I'm thinking about it more, probably just straight pulling on the broken arm probably would be quite hard if not impossible.

However how about just twisting it around probably easier to tear it off like that right? Thats how crocs tear flesh off thier prey.
Link Posted: 1/20/2006 11:39:18 AM EST
Its not as hard as you might imagine.

But it is quite messy.

Wear old clothes.

If yer a woman, its easier to just talk someones ear off, rather than rip it off.

The first time was a bitch. Like any learned process, I got better the more I did it. Disjointing the shoulder is easy. The connective tissue is the difficult part.

Now, ripping off their head and crapping down their neck? That's tough!
Link Posted: 1/20/2006 1:03:58 PM EST
Yeah, twisting is a good idea!

[rejected animations] Mah spoon is too big[/rejected]

Except he repped out the guy's stomach, beat him to death with it, then wore it as a hat whilst dancing and grwoing his arms to impossibly long lengths
Link Posted: 1/20/2006 2:15:54 PM EST

It depends.....................are they still alive or dead?

I think I might have a problem with somebody trying to remove my arm. Yes, I would definitely have to put up a fight.

They have forced me to spend inordinate amounts of money on guns/ammo to defend myself against them. Granted, that's all I'd do with all of my money anyways, but still....

Chuck Norris once ripped off his own arm and beat an annoying old hag to death with it.
Then he used her guts to sew his arm back on.

Just kidding

But this guy could do it:
Link Posted: 1/20/2006 4:21:15 PM EST
A chimp could do it. A 165 pound female was tested on a static pull while she was enraged. Her one-armed pull registered 3,500 pounds.

+1

During Gross Anatomy we took the whole body apart. The shoulder joint is held together very well with ligaments and tendons. It would be very difficult to 'rip' off. The joint is easily dislocated but that is a far cry from ripping the arm 'off'. You also have the skin to contend with. You would have better luck trying to twist it off, but even then you would need a significant size discrepancy ie. OJ Simpson vs. a toddler.

We had a bitch of a time getting the hip joint out because of its ball-and-socket configuration. I remember pounding away with a hammer trying to 'pop' it out.

are you specifically saying O.J. because he's black? like black people are more likely to attack toddlers?

+1 Best answer, and it would probably be substantially easier than sticking your boot up their ass.

Your best bet is to twist while simultaniously tearing with your teeth. Use of fire and / or caustic chemicals tends to soften the connective tissues as well.

Good luck.

O.J. Simpson's black? I thought he was Samoan. In any case, I was using him as an example of someone who possesses enough strength to twist off a child's arm. I could have used my brother George as an example but you don't know him.
