Man Found With Arsenal of Assault Weapons Released on Bond
(KFWB) -- A Pasadena man who was arrested after police found about five dozen
assault weapons and 15,000 rounds of ammunition in his home is being released on a
$50,000 dollar bond.

Leonard William Herbert, a TV engineer who works for ABC, was caught with the
arsenal of weapons after he called police to report that a pickup truck had crashed into
his backyard. Police did not find the driver of the truck, but they did spot dozens of
fully-automatic machine guns, assault rifles, silencers and pistols inside Herbert's
house.

Herbert, 58, says he's a gun collector. But an Asst. U.S. Attorney alleges that the
investigation leads them to believe he may have been involved in illegal weapons
sales. In arguing against his release, she cited evidence including a metal shop on his
property with tools to alter firearms and the fact that most of the weapons were
concealed within the house.

He faces federal charges of unlawful possession of machine guns and is charged in
state court with five counts of assault weapon possession. Prosecutors have not
determined which case will be tried first.

There is a lesson here. Do not leave your machine guns laying around in the open where the police can see them when they search the house looking for a criminal.  

And just HOW did this go to court?  Seems to me the PD didn't have "probable cause" to check all these things out!

Let's look at one other point - anyone with a decent Dremel kit and a little brains has the wherewithal to modify firearms.  Any well-stocked metal shop can actually MANUFACTURE firearms with a decent machinist on staff (cf. "DIY Submachine Gun")  So, most of htis case is of couse bupkis and puts me in mind of purges and pogroms...

I still don't see what the probable cause was to go inside the guy's house.

Leaving guns out in plain view while being a terrible lack of judgement, doesn't constitute a crime.

Does it?

Did they really chase the alleged robbery suspect inside the house?

Was there actually a robbery suspect?

Did he let them in the house voluntarily?

Is it a crime to leave your weapons in your private residence out sunbathing?

How could the police tell they were f/a weapons by looking at them through the window?

Were they SBR's?

Did they see silencers through the window that were marked AWC?  Gemtech?

WTF?

All I have to say is "Phuck, what a waste" All those fine firearms will now be turned into a manhole cover. I live 20 miles from Pasadena, too bad I did not know this guy lol :D

Maybe it is just me but this story smells fishy.  It is just too pat.  

So, if the cops spotted "dozens" in his house, yet most of the "dozens" were concealed, how did they see them? To me, "spotted" means seeing something without looking for it, or at most after an impromptu search.

The lesson of this story? Make the CA cops do their job from [b]outside[/b] your house, and don't cooperate with them for anything! It's obvious who they're really out to get.

Maybe The state of California should draw up a bill to ban machine shops & require a licence to engage in all hobbies.
How did the PD notice that the "dozens" of weapons were altered for FA just from a peek in the window ? What a  JOKE !

Well, from the shitty "reporting" job of KFWB it's hard to tell.

On one hand I have to say that IF this guy was doing what the reports says he was doing (illegal) then I am glad that he was caught.
That's all we need is for some little "child" to get his hands on one of these and go to town in a school or some such stuff.

On the other hand, he MIGHT of owned all of those firearms legaly, (all owned in accordance with Kalifornias fucked up gun laws) and he now has to play a little game to get them all back...of course he will be filing suit against everyone and his brother for his troubles.

If some of you guys would just read the report instead of going off you would see that he called the police.
Now, (it's just me) if I lived in Kalifornia and I had a large collection of firearms (legal or illegal) I sure as FUCK would have them hidden away where no one could "see" them unless I wanted them to see them.

Perhaps the police looked and saw an AR15, so they called the Kalifornia DOJ and ran a REGISTRATION check to see if the guy had any "registered assault weapons" and it came back negitive.

This is just one case of someone not having the common sense God gave to goats.

Lastly, what if the cops had just looked the other way when they saw the firearms and the next day home-boy goes postal in a youth center or his workplace.
Ya think the same guys who are bashing the cops for busting the guy would be all over them for NOT busting the guy?

He shoulda had well over 100,000 rds. stored away, not 15,000.

This man should have been more careful, considering the political/anti-gun climate in Pasadena,Calif regarding guns. The city council and police chief pushed very hard for the ammunition registration a fews ago. It goes to show that no good deed will go unpunished in Pasadena. People that are into shooting military-style guns should always be mindful of the political climate, and not put your head in the sand, and thinking that it won't happen to me. This is a very seriou mistake, with a very high price to be paid.

if he has that much of a passion for those weapons he should have found a less-communist state to live in.
