It's family weekend, just graduated basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Checked my AKO and im supposed to report to Ft. Carson by July 11th. AIT for 19D Cavalry Scout starts monday, and we graduate June 2nd. That leaves over a month from graduation till when I'm due for duty. I know we only get about two weeks leave after OSUT, but I don't have to report for over a month... I know my questions can be answered by my Cadre and Drill Sergeants when I get back next week... But WTF? I know they won't let me have that much time leave, so will I stay at Ft. Knox till a little over 2 weeks I'm supposed to report to Colorado? I'm going to 4th ID i know that, not too thrilled.. would rather go to Germany or Ft. Hood.. even Korea. What am I in for? I'm pretty sure 4th ID is deploying to Iraq this fall, but I'm not entirely sure since I can't find a clear cut answer on the internet.

first off, congrats on graduation, nothing like that class smoke session in Cass A's
second, when you get ready TO PCS from Knox, they'll give you the full rundown. where, who, when, etc. don't sweat it. Orders can be and have been rescinded, updated, for a myriad of different reasons, even at 0 hour. Just roll with the punches. your BN S1 has a shit ton of soldiers leaving globally, every week or so, they'll square you away etc. any confusion? ask questions. this isn't Training anymore, they're not gonna chew you out. only stupid question is the one not asked but needed. |
|
Get used to asking your NCOs to square you away.
I won't answer your question. I can. But I won't. Because your Chain of Concern is your primary resource for this type of thing. Be glad that you got Carson and not Hood. |
|
You'll like Carson. You'll sure like it a damn sight better than Hood, I
promise you. Hope you're not in a div cav squadron, if those even exist now a days. Your assignment will be what you make it. Nothing more, nothing less. It's all up to you. If you want to report to your unit early, you can. I reported early after just a week of leave. You just sign into the AG unit, and they'll get you started. |

Well I only graduated basic, still have AIT to go |

I liked Carson for the 1.5 years that I was there. ETS'd from there in '93. Great post, CO is beautiful. Try to get out and see the sites when you can.

If you have read them very carefully for "early report is authorized" , but Jack is right ask your NCOs to give you the no shit answer |

I was never military but I've been to Carson, Drum, Hood, and Riley.
Carson is by far the best. Colorado Springs is full of beautiful hottehs. Though navigating all areas of the base year round is a challenge. Hood sucks worst of all of those. |
|
I did some work out of Carson a few years back... C- Springs is a nice area, there will be a ton of shit for you to get into on your off time.

Korea is abysmal, Germany is just getting back from AFG, Hood...wow. 4ID is not closing out Iraq. You need Paratroopers for that elite, dangerous mission. |
|
Fresh haircut before you report to get to your unit. And for the love of god stand at parade rest when you meet your 1SG. We are getting so many new guys and chaptering them out a month later. I would give anything to be at Carson instead of Riley but I'll be out soon enough anyways. Best of luck.
|
|
Ok I retract my statement wanting to go to Ft. Hood haha. So does anyone know when and where 4th ID is deploying? All I know at this moment from my AKO is that i need to report to Carson by July 11th.. and I finish OSUT the 2nd day of June.
|
|
The reason your orders say you are to report NLT 11 JUL 11, even though you are scheduled to graduate AIT on 02 JUN 11, is simple. It's because you're only scheduled to graduate on that date, you're not guaranteed to graduate on that date (or any date, for that matter). It simply builds in a little room in case you bolo and get dropped into a later class. If you do graduate on time, you should recieve your two weeks leave and will then be told to report into FT Carson once your leave is over.
Congrats on graduating basic and have fun in AIT. |

I sent my recruiter a post card, on which I called him a leg. One of the other recruiters saw it and made a call into one of the ABN School cadre members for my company. The two of them were battle buddies and had been each other's best man. SGT ABN had me doing flutterkicks in his office on behalf of his buddy. FML. |

Four seasons and some of the best hunting in the world. I miss the place immensely. I highly recommend the Golden Bee, if it is still there. |

When we graduated in '03 for 11B, those on Active Duty were given their 2 weeks leave and the opportunity to get another 2 weeks leave by signing up for "Hometown Recruiting" where you went to the local recruiters office of your hometown and worked with them for 2 weeks, helping try to recruit people while getting some extra time at home. Do they still do this? And if so, I wonder if that's why the extra 2 weeks as well. |
|
Haven't been there in many years. You could do a lot worse though. Nice area as I recall.
|
|
You will like Ft. Carson and the Springs area. During WWII there was a German POW camp there. The Germans liked it so much, a lot of them moved back to the Springs after the war.
|
|
Colorado is an outdoorsman's wet dream. Hell, do things right, and you can hunt some fine elk on Carson.
And yes, the Golden Bee is still here, and "buzzing". |
|
Congrats and don't stress.
You're not actually going to Ft. Carson until the airplane you are riding in has it's wheels up after take off. What I'm saying is, never think that just because the Army says this is what you're doing today that it won't be different tomorrow. |

Meh.
I was "Umbrella'ed" under Ft. Carson, and had to go there for paperwork and stuff, but was actually stationed in Aurora. Carson was one of the better Army posts I have been to, but it is still an Army post. |

You can report early - your report date is a NLT -
Here's some advice - take a week or 10 days - don't even take the full two weeks - you don't want to start out in the hole. Get some leave that you keep on the books for emergency - I have 30 days I try to keep banked - but even as a young Solider I would encourage you to try and keep at least 15 days on the books. Good on you young man for serving your country when so many won't. Enjoy 4th ID and Carson. |

H,aHaha! I had to hump the radio during the ftx, but that was the only thing in the pack. I can't wait to find out what exact troop i'll be in. Does Carson have a Stryker brigade? All of my Drill Sergeants say they are pieces of shit... the Bradley too. A couple of them are reclassed from 19k's though. I was planning on going down early, I wanted to try and get a new (used) car first because my piece of shit '98 grand am probably wont make it from Maryland to Colorado and I want to bring my guns with me. Im going to have to keep them locked in the armory though aren't I since ill be in the barracks and not my own house

If you ever want to sign them out you need written permission from the CO. They become army property and are put on the CO's property book. corrected The armorer will prob hate you for it. And that's not a man you want to piss off. Even as an armorer i left my shit at home thats how much of a pain it was. Good luck to you, carson is the shit. Much better than staring at pine trees in NC ETA: you also will be calling in an armorer on his time off to sign anything out. and you can only have them for the day so he has to come in twice |
