Got it used for a song, and just because I have had a Butler Creek folder I got in a trade laying around. Came with 5 mags, one a Thermold. It puts all 30 into an 8" paper plate at 100 yds. Not as good as my AR (which can put them all inside a silver dollar at 100yd), but I think I'll keep it. I know this is sacrilege on this site, but I couldn't be happier. Flame Away!

Its a bullet hose and you are happy. I don't see why there should be a flame fest.
Link Posted: 10/7/2004 10:13:22 PM EST
I like mine, eats wolf like none other. Not too accurate, but extremely reliable.
Link Posted: 10/7/2004 10:14:57 PM EST
Our local dealer has/had one a couple days ago. EXCELLENT condition, with a side folder, blued steel, great looking wood. $425 I wish so badly that I could get it right now but I'm probably going to have to pass on it.
Link Posted: 10/7/2004 10:19:14 PM EST
Don't own one (but have heard all the reports). If you got it for a song then you done good.

I'll stick to my M1A Scout and SKS's while trapped in the PRK. There will be an AR (and an AK and a FAL and a *lot* of other good shit) in the safe just as soon as possible after I move.
Link Posted: 10/7/2004 10:45:46 PM EST
I guess its OK since you got it used.

Dont support a company that does not support your rights.

that's why I boycott ruger and glock. I want to buy a ruger mini-14 though used so I can turn it into some kind of hell gun. The Crayon Bullet Hose from BEYOND! ...... and Ruger still has no dick.
Link Posted: 10/7/2004 10:59:30 PM EST
You got a Ruger, even though you got it used your buying it will cause AR15s to be melted down as scrap metal..

Its Da Devil
Link Posted: 10/7/2004 11:01:29 PM EST
says who?
Link Posted: 10/7/2004 11:12:10 PM EST
when the AR's damaged/jammed.....you can count on the mini.....eats anything you feed it as long as its .223
Link Posted: 10/7/2004 11:31:12 PM EST
i've got a ranch rifle that is very handy. doesn't have ar accuracy but that's not why i purchased it. nice little compact carbine that's perfect for storage in the truck and plinking. never understood the dislike for them. and with a heavier barrel they're money, though i guess you might as well get an ar at that point.

My ranch rifle works fine. Not accurate, but goes bang every time and is close enough for what it's for.
Link Posted: 10/8/2004 4:05:45 AM EST
congrats , its a solid gun. You'll have planty of fun with it.

I love my Ranch Rifle. Great farm gun and fun gun. I don't punch paper, so MOC (minute of coyote) accuracy is fine with me.

Get a folding stock and you can go out and play A-Team.

I have a Mini-14 and I really like it......enjoy it

No flames. I have a Mini. Great reliable workhorse. With the standard stock it doesn't scare the peasants.
I did two things to mine. Started using 50 gr AE JHP. Disassembled the trigger group and polished all the contact surfaces. That removed most of the grittiness. The trigger wasn't lighter but smoother and thus felt lighter. It now shoots about 4 to 5 MOA. Good for a Mini.
Link Posted: 10/8/2004 4:30:16 AM EST
I'd love my Mini-14 if it shot tighter groups and better magazines were available for it.

"Only accurate guns are interesting."

That said, I had one, sold it, wish I had it back.

I have a ranch rifle and love it. Sometime soon I'm looking to put a butler creek folder on it. So far its been very reliable.
Link Posted: 10/8/2004 6:04:15 AM EST
It's goes bang, shoots lead and pisses off Fineswine & Company.

What's not to like?
Link Posted: 10/8/2004 6:04:45 AM EST
I'm not a fan. Enjoy it.
Link Posted: 10/8/2004 6:09:16 AM EST

Here's mine, photo may not last too long (yahoo). Heavy barrel, accurate, hate hate hate the mags Did I say I hate the mags
Link Posted: 10/8/2004 6:18:48 AM EST
I've always thought, for what they are, they are excellent little rifles.
Link Posted: 10/8/2004 9:28:34 AM EST
I have 2, I like them, the women actually like them more than the AR. Good general purpose or back up rifle to have. I have a stainless ranch and and old BLue, like 20+ years old.
Link Posted: 10/8/2004 9:49:48 AM EST
Nothing wrong with the Mini14. Not an AR but a damn fine gun on its own merits. My stainless sits next to
next to my dresser with a 20 rounder in. I pity the fool who breaks in to my house.

Ayoob refers to them as "The American Kalashnikov".

8MOA out of a Mini-14 ???

Man, THAT'S a keeper!!!

Not everything Ayoob says is fact.

It doesn't have anything at all in common with the Kalashnikov's.

Well it does take a detachable magazine.

If he had of said it is the 'Po-man's M14/M1A' then it wouldn't be so laughable.

I like mine, ranch rifle and I found a factory folder for unltra cheap.

It's a good reliable 50-200 meter bullet thrower. A great "wife gun" or "hand out gun" for SHTF situations. Doesn't scare people (unless you have a folder on it) shoots cheaper ammo better than ARs so more plinking time = more fun.

Do you know what you are talking about or just driveling shit outta your mouth?

Please elaborate how Ruger does not support the rights of Americans.

How about when Ruger came out with that policy that didn't let their employees ride motorcycles because they were too dangerous.

And that affects Americans how?

EVERY company has some kind policy you may not like. Simple solution.......Dont work there. They are not forcing you to not drive a motorcycle to work.

Amazingly enough, even the USA mags are not irredeemable. Had some that didn't feed and determined the problem to be the feeding geometry by comparing it to a Ruger 5 round mag as it sat locked. Silver soldered a 1/16" extension to the bottom of the extruded locking tab, then refinished with Alumahyde II. Since then 100% on the three problem mags. Not sure about durability in the long term since I normally only use a couple of factory fives and what I believe to be a rather rare PMI 10.

It affects Americans because it wasn't any of Bill FUCKIN Ruger's business what his employess do when they aren't cranking out Mini-14's.
What would YOU say if YOUR employer told you YOU couldn't drive an SUV because they are too dangerous? Or a compact car because they are too dangerous? Or take a shower because they are too dangerous? Or own a swimming pool beacuse they are too dangerous? Or own firearms because they are too dangerous? Or you couldn't drink a beer? Or you couldn't fly in private airplanes? Or you couldn't ride a skateboard? It's not their call. If you are involved in a lawful activity, they need to stay the hell out of your personal business.

BTW, Ruger recinded that policy when the stink it caused was publicised.

Another strike against the Mini-14. Last time I checked, factory Ruger 20 round mags were going for over $100 a pop, and PMI mags are going for $60 each on gunbroker

Here's the deal I got on some AR mags today. 16 used USGI mags for $70. I bought some NIW ones a week ago for $11.95 each. AR MAGS
16 mags for the Mini-14 would be about $1600 for factory Ruger mags or $960 for the "cheap" PMI mags.

Tell me one more time why the Mini-14 is a good firearm to have?

I have never paid $60 for any PMI mag around here. I think the most was $45 for a forty rounder.

I like the Mini-14. It's hardly a tack driver, but then it wasn't meant to be one. It's just a fun little gun to shoot.

Besides, it's a good thing you got one now at a decent price. The next battle over the AWB will include it by name.
