Wow!

It blows away the competition that the masses are brainwashed to use.

Why did I take so long to wake up?

Its so true and it has been for years. The mac OS just simply works, but most people are unwilling to accept that Windows is a POS so they just label Mac lovers as "fanatics".

I'll be the fun killer... it is simpler for me to use Windows for my work softwares than to try to run an emulator or whatever you'd care to call it. Same processor power in a PC costs way less and mac has yet to make a tablet PC as my school required I purchase. IBM is my beast of choice. Enjoy your new computer though!

Yep, that's it.

It has nothing at all to do with one of the "faithful" flipping out and accusing Google of being anti-Mac on one of the recent threads, when I pointed out that security risks are discovered at roughly the same rate as Windows in OSX. They just aren't exploited as often.

Macs are just better

I was using a 17" G4 Titanium Powerbook for my home computing needs. The thing is a 9 year old computer and delt with anything I could throw at it without a problem. It finally tossed it's logic board a week ago. Not a big deal, it was bought for $300 used a few years back and is lighter and slimmer than new notebooks. Actually, the build-quality is outstanding from a consumer electronics standpoint.

I just replaced it with a 17" G4 iMac. One of the "lampshade" models. Picked this guy up for $200 Seems to take whatever I throw at it too, but it is a little slow on the newest version of Safari. Running 10.4.1 on both.

I will be getting a new macbook pro in the fall with all the bells and whistles, but for now this old mac will do just fine

I'm on a PC 8-12 hours a day at work. I welcome the change of sceanery when I come home. I would not switch back.

I just downloaded the latest version of Safari 4.0.

The Top Sites feature is something to behold. I just wish the Reload/Stop button was on the other side of the toolbar.
And I'd dearly love to delete Google as part of the Toolbar. Most of my Google searches are for images and not subjects.

Honestly many Mac users are fanatics. Scary even. Yeah ther are some Linux and even Windows fanatics, but Mac fanatics are the most rabid.

I love Mac software.

I hate their hardware. Well, I don't hate it, but I hate the fact they expect you to pay a premium for hardware that is exactly the same as regular PC hardware.

If Apple charged normal prices (or even a small premium) for their hardware, I would never buy another PC. But I paid a premium for my Macbook, and it's had more problems than any PC I've ever owned. So far, it's eaten two hard disks.

I just want to buy a fucking xMac. I am seriously considering a Hackintosh for my next computer.

I'd throw 10.4.11 on the lampshade. 10.4.1 had issues. Actually 10.4.2 was really rock solid if I remember correctly...

Anyway, take a peek at the RAM, make sure you're up over 512 at least. Big performance boost at 512/768 on the lampshades. If you can't figure out what type of RAM to buy, hit the apple, then "About this Mac". If it's an 800mhz, you need a single PC-133, 144-pin SODIMM, max of 512mb. If it's a 1.0ghz or 1.25ghz, you need a single PC-2100, 200 pin SODIMM, max of 1gb. All three have a second "factory installed" ram slot that's a whore to get to. I recommend skipping it.

If that's the titanium (and not an aluminum cousin), you can likely recoup your original investment if the screen hinges are undamaged. They were a real bad point of failure and the titaniums were such a limited run that parts really weren't available.

At least a year ago when I went looking for parts for a guy, those hinges were fucking GOLD. Pull the hard drive and put the Powerbook on Ebay. Set the reserve at $400, see what happens. Somewhere there's a loser willing to pay half the price of a new machine for a chance at resurrecting his baby.

With the exception of some fujitsu and western digital drives, most HDD failures in laptops are due to the user. No mechanical hard disk out there is designed to be moved while it is in operation. A majority of laptop users put the thing literally in their lap instead of a solid desk or table surface and every move they make is transmitted right through the machine, or while driving in the car, etc.

Same here, tossed it out of the office and grabbed a pc from the training room instead. The resolution sucked and it kept locking up w/ leopard.

I will never understand people who buy Macs. They are WAY overpriced.

From Apple's Website

RAM:

Mac:
16GB (8x2GB) $500.00
32GB (8x4GB) $6,100.00

You can get 2GB sticks of 1066Mhz DDR3 RAM (the same type as in the mac) for ~$30 a pop at places like NewEgg

RAID Controller:

Mac:
$700.00

PC:
Varies by company, but easily available for as little as $45.00 (even less if you are willing to go with a more questionable brand)

Hard Drives:

Mac:
Upgrade from 640GB to 1TB (1000GB) $100
Each additional 1TB drive: $300

PC:Varies from $90.00 to $150.00, with a few exceptions.

As far as I am concerned, I can build a seriously badass PC for less than half the price of a similarly powerful Mac. Then, I can put Ubuntu on it (which runs better, is more secure, and is free) and maybe a dual boot with Windows if my work required me to use a program that doesn't have a linux counterpart (which most do) and emulation didn't work (which it usually does).

Had a customer call once (when I was doing server support at Dell)... someone did a chmod *.* / 777 on a server. It went TU. They wanted help. Had to tell 'em they would have to reinstall... there's no easy recovery from fucking up permissions on every file on the dang server!

Same here.

My old eMac G4 1.25 is still running good but it hardly ever gets used anymore. I tend to surf from the Lenovo netbook. I was hoping Apple would package something in the Mini that could compete with my QC 9650/8GB/2TB Vista 64 office box.

ETA: Here's what I bought instead of the Mac Mini. I found it on clearance at BestBuy for $299 and couldn't say no. HDMI FTW.

Just get an AppleTV. It's cheaper than a Mini anyway.

That's why most folks who are not first time Apple customers buy the base machine with the lowest RAM, HDD, and accessories and then upgrade it right out of the box with Newegg parts.

Ubuntu more secure and runs better than OS X? That's debatable, very debatable. Also, Mac has Parallels to run Windows and Win apps.

There's not anything on the web that you can't view with a Mac if you can find your ass with at least one of your hands.
