July 19, 2010 In an incident reminiscent of a war torn third world country, officers were sniper fired upon from an Oakland apartment building during an arrest. Listen to two local residents who witnesses the shooting: The officers backed down and called for additional resources," said OPD Lt. David Elzey. Officers searched the building after the shooting stopped but they did not find the shooter or any weapons. Police say the building did have video surveillance cameras, but the system was vandalized. This incident is third officer-involved shooting in two days for Oakland. On Saturday morning, BART and Oakland police officers fatally shot a man near the Fruitvale BART station after he reportedly charged at officers with knives in both hands. Then, around midnight Sunday, a DUI traffic stop on I-580 turned into a gun battle between the driver, who wore body armor and had multiple weapons, and CHP officers. The gun fight ended after CHP officers shot the driver multiple times but did not kill him. In a very dangerous precedent for the rest of the country, Oakland police salary negotiations have failed. One of the nation's most crime-ridden cities had to lay off almost 10 percent of its police force. To start, 80 officers have been laid off. The dismissals leave the embattled department with 696 officers in a city of more than 400,000 residents.During Negotiations, Chief Anthony Batts listed exactly 44 situations that his officers will no longer respond to and they include grand theft, burglary, car wrecks, identity theft and vandalism. He says if you live in Oakland and one of the above happens to you, you need to let police know on-line. Here's a partial list: burglary theft embezzlement grand theft grand theft:dog identity theft false information to peace officer required to register as sex or arson offender dump waste or offensive matter discard appliance with lock loud music possess forged notes pass fictitious check obtain money by false voucher fraudulent use of access cards stolen license plate embezzlement by an employee (over $ 400) extortion attempted extortion false personification of other injure telephone/ power line interfere with power line unauthorized cable tv connection vandalism administer/expose poison to another Victims would have to report those and other crimes online. As a result of the layoffs, Oakland Police Chief Anthony Batts has had to eliminate all 63 officers who work closely with community groups to prevent crime and address community safety issues. These officers comprised the lion's share of the law enforcement side of the community policing equation. It looks like Oakland will be the test case for self preservation in a violent large city. Our advise would be to immediately move. If you live in Oakland, being armed and wearing body armor seem to be your only recourse against crime. |

Whole lotta "good quality journalism" going on in that article, starting with... officers were sniper fired upon from an Oakland apartment building during an arrest |

Isn't this where the police "almost tazed" a handcuffed guy in the back?

while this may be ghetto related, a good bit of anger is building in this country. the popo represent the bad side of what the people are angry over. i have said from the start as the economy continues to flounder this is going to escalate. oakland is going to get worse.

A little more legal CCW and the problem would eventually take care of itself.

Found it...and the answer is no.

Police enforce the laws that punish people for harming no one (excessive fines for speeding tickets/traffic related/seat belt laws, etc, drug laws) how do you expect the people to react? Maybe cops should lobby against these kind of laws/penalties or even be a little lax in enforcing them. |

Isn't this where the police "almost tazed" a handcuffed guy in the back? Still no excuse for taking shots at other cops. Still no excuse for rioting. That said... I can't imagine what kind of fuck-up mistakes a gun for a taser. |

Is "Bud" an Oakland thing? That fat whore in the Amberlamps said it too.

Sounds like the Chippies may have been using the wrong tools for the job at hand. |

Haha, I said to myself that night.
"Wow, sounds like when I lived near Fort Lewis and they would have a range day. No way those are gun shots.." |

Not to be glib about it, (because there is sadness in the number of decent people in Oakland), but is there REALLY a downside in that toilet burning itself to the ground?
Set up a National Guard quarantine and let the animals kill each other. |
|
Still on 1? I'm in. Scary to see Oakland going downhill this quick. First, pregnant chicks at BK, now snipers? I don't want to see next week's headlines at this rate.

I can really see functional no-go zones for police appearing in the coming years.
The simple fact is that there doesn't need to be some economic cataclysm for this occur...municipal finances are in such a state that we'll be seeing less police presence, not more. Even if we end up with a lost economic decade like the Japanese, and not some depression, the effects on local governments as the feds retrench financially could be pretty devestating. The NG or the Feds can't do the sustained presense-patrolling required, for a variety of reasons. |

Good thing I don't live there. I bought another 14 USGI mags and a Glock 33rd mag anyway.

Isn't this the same town where a bunch of cops were recently let go because they (or their union) wouldn't agree to contract terms?

Oakland explodes in a ball of fire. Win-win for America. Except for the Men and Women of America serving their country stationed nearby living there. |

Laid off almost 10 percent of its police force, but no bureaucrats were laid off. If I had to guess.

They probably will, but they also can absorb losses far easier than the local PD can. Sooner or later we'll see a either a national guard or some kind of federal presence. Or, the police will back out and let Oakland burn. |

But combine ghettos, and shit like that, are you really surprised that people would be angry with the police? I think, honestly, if the police were down there handing out soccer balls and walking little old ladies to church, there would be a critical mass of people who see the police as emblematic of a majority white society they feel that benefits from their poverty. Now, I think that there have been some police actions that have stoked the fires, and those individual actions need to be dealt with appropriately, but decades of information operations will have an eventual effect. Those information operations have blended conspiracy theory (CIA crack connection), some legitimate greivences, some class warfare, and genuine anti-Americanism and brewed up a really noxious cocktail that is our urban centers. Personally, I don't think that black rabble rousers are smart enough to pull off an insurgency. I don't know if they are smart enough not to try. Obviously, they won't call it what it will be. |
