Need information about smart TV. Ordered a TV on Black Friday sale.

Sharp 42 inch class 42 Diag led
108op HDTV black
model lc-42lb261
sku 5420123    $317.99

Friends have mentioned that I should've paid an additional hundred dollars to get a smart TV.

What are the advantages and exactly what can you do with the smart TV.
Basic understanding is that you can easily connect to the Internet. But if someone could explain how this
is accomplished and what the advantages are  I'd appreciate  it.

Any information to decide if I should cancel the order. Then go for TV with a higher education.
Thanks in advance

Smart tv has wireless interweb access
You connect smart tv to your home's wireless network (or wired if you feel like it)
Smart tv connects to interwebs.
Interwebs provides Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Pandora etc.

Smart tv works intermittently, is slow, clunky and crashes.
You get frustrated with smart tv, buy an outboard streaming device (Appletv, Roku etc)
Never use Smart tv again.

I'd much rather have a regular TV and a $40 stick for the smartness.  I've been unimpressed with the smart TVs I've used.

I didn't really care until my folks bought one and I came down to set it up for them.

The Vizio they bought was really nice for the money, immediately connected to their WiFi (had to input password though) and controls were fairly simple. Just push a button and it brings up a menu with all the apps.

I got my Dad signed into his YouTube account and signed up for Netflix. Now he can't help but watch a movie or show on Netflix. I warned him though. Netflix can be like crack on a day you don't have anything to do.

I'd probably consider giving up my dumb 46" LED TV if I watched more TV. My console does all of the things a smart TV does, but the smart TV is pretty convenient. Plus, you can impose what's on your phone screen if you have a smart phone. Like if you want to show off any pics or movies. Or your personal porn collection.

You can't buy a descent TV without the smart and other features.  The smart feature and most others are useless.

I have pen to write on screen, pop up camera, side speakers, smart, voice control, 3D,  secondary curser remote, and others I can't remember, every one useless. Well used 3D once, kinda cool.

All I wanted was the best picture made

Basically you can get to Amazon/Netflix/Other via Smart TV/Roku/Chrome Cast/Apple TV/Amazon Fire TV.  Smart TV has the advantage of being a standard not controlled by one company.  I've got a Smart TV and Roku boxes on other sets.  For watching Prime, one is as good as the other.

I have three Smart TVs, none of which have any of those problems.

Next time, stay away from Panaphonics, Magnetbox, and Sorny.

You can also buy a Sony model 3200 blu ray player for $50 that may provide the functionality of a smart TV.  That price is via Bestbuy.com maybe until tomorrow....free shipping.

my smart TV apps work just as well as my Roku 3.  I don't even use the Roku anymore.

I have a couple Vizios. Got them cheap on Black Friday sale $650 for 65" last year. Haven't experienced any of the the negatives mentioned. All the positives are handy. Netflix, YouTube, etc at your fingertips. The one complaint I might have is having another wireless monitoring device hooked up to the internet in the living room and bedroom. NSA probably monitors us through our TVs now. It's so 1984.

This may be true. Because I was offered for another $99 I would be able to listen to all of Obama's meetings. And give a thumbs-up or down. For an additional charge of $.25

BEST BUY   can give you any option.

Thanks for all the great information.

I guess I'll keep my order. And just pay for the add-on  tutor. To bring it up to grade. Hopefully that'll make it smart enough for me.

Almost miss having to get up and choose between the four channels available. Almost

BEST BUY seems like it was a pretty good deal. With free delivery. Should be here Friday now that all my favorite series ended what to watch,

I guess I'll try Alaska off-road looks good in the teasers.

Now what to do with my 15-year-old Toshiba

Still working but I can use the 2 1/2 feet behind it.

Any ideas target. Fish tank, trying to get over my Hoarding addiction and not put it in the garage never to be seen again.

I guess donated there's a veterans organization that picks up household stuff guess I'll give them a call.

We sell and install a lot of displays. Mostly Samsung, occasionally LG and a couple of Sonys.

I also have one of the really nice 240hz Samsungs at my house. Has all the bells and whistles except the webcam.

Still sucks. I have a herd of Appletvs and Rokus that I use for streaming.

Example: I tried to use the "Smart" part of my tv to stream something off amazon. Every 15 minutes, like clockwork, the Amazon app would crash, kicking me out of the show.
Switched over to the Roku, found same show, binge watched the next 4 episodes without a hiccup.
I make sure firmware on the display is current and I use it on occasion to see if it has gotten any better and/or address client issues.
