I'm in need of a .22 rifle for some varmit killing on my property in the country. I don't need anything fancy, and I'm not looking to trick out the rifle with every after market accessory known to man. I've been keeping an eye out for the venerable Ruger 10/22s for a while, but I rarely see the base model for under $250+ in the shops in my area, and most usually only carry the more expensive versions.

Local Fleet Farm ad just came out and they have a Savage Arms Mark II F bolt action rifle on sale for $169. What are the hive's thoughts on this? Good rifle at a good price?

good basic rifle, will be accurate as you probably need.  no threads so no can, just fYI.

Savages are good rifles, but I'm unloading mine cause those mags.  they suck.

If you're looking for a solid .22 with good accuracy, that one will be great.

I have an FV-SR, which is basically the same gun, with a few extra goodies.  The gun is great, but the cheap plastic stock leaves a lot to be desired.  I ended up changing my to a Boyd's stock and love it.  The guns are great shooters though.

They work fine, no frills, etc. I'd suggest looking at the Ruger American Rimfire as an alternative however.

I got one used for $125, sold it because I have little use for a cartridge I can't reload. When I can shoot .45ACP cast bullets for the same price per round, rimfire loses its appeal.

$169 is fair, I guess.
