Just a question sparked by an Ann Coulter editorial along the same lines.

What "requirements" does membership in NATO have for countries? To send a "strong statement" via press release should a fellow member's soil be attacked? Anything else?

It means France has started a crash program to bleach and fold a large supply of white handkerchiefs.

Wait, they aren't in NATO anymore.  Oh well, it probably doesn't affect their cloth-based strategy.

Respond against whom, exactly?   A mob of a couple of hundred Syrians or Iranians?

While it appears clear that both Syrian and Iranian officials may have tactily allowed the people to burn the embassies, it is certainly not provable, and so since there is no state or government that directly attacked the embassies, I'm not sure anything formal could be done, even if Denmark wanted NATO to do something.
