Why does my dog have to smell her s#!t every time she drops a load?

Honestly, I think they are giving themselves a gastrick check up.  What they aren't digesting tells them if something is wrong.  Not that most dogs are smart enough to do anything about it.

Seriously, people all check out there scat, we're just too lazy to lean over and smell it.
I've been a nurse for 11 years and have yet to see, even the most sick individual, get up off the toilet and not look. We do however (surgeons included) take note of smell, consistancy, ect. of crap. I saw a surgeon put his nose in a colostmy bag more than once, you can tell what kind, if any, infectious process is going on.
