With the recent talks about the F-35, what equipment/firearms/vehicles/aircraft should the pentagon/gov should have chosen instead?
Not limited to just the F-35 but ANY military trials where you think they chose poorly.

I think the gov screwed up with going with the F-22 as the F-23 was the better performer and a better looking aircraft to boot.

They should have bought LAAR planes instead of the A10.

Tom Morgenfeld summed up why the F-22 was chosen pretty well:

Northrop built the plane to the proposal very well, but Lockheed built the airplane the Air Force really wanted.

Northrop had the B-2 contract already.  Had the YF-23 been able to travel at MACH 5 using sea water as fuel, was able to destroy targets 100 miles away with lasers, and the waste it produced was made of gold bricks,  they still wouldn't have given the contract to Northrop.

This is what make me think of the participation ribbon syndrome, where everybody gets to win regardless if your actually better or not.

Hate to burst the B-2 bubble but the reality of that aircraft is couched in inter-service rivalry.
The carrerists in the AF would not be happy until they had a weapons system that cost as much as an aircraft carrier. Hence the B-2. There are very few B-2 missions I am aware of (prime function being weapons delivery) that cannot be accomplished via the use of drones, cruise missiles, and conventional armed ICBMs. 2 billion dollars a pop for a subsonic flying whale that will fall out of the sky if the computers crap out on you.
