I know this is a dupe.
This has likely been discussed on several accounts as a matter of fact, so what say you?

Should previous military service be mandatory for a US Presidential Candidate?

Poll coming.....sorry TRG, not that kind

Absolutely not.   Military veteran != great president.   The country cannot be run like the military; the president is not a general and people don't ask how high when he says jump.

I'm also suspicious of high profile military people who have gone into politics.   It seems to me that more often than not they are ready and willing to abridge citizens rights.   Kerry, Clark, McCain, etc. have all come out on the side of neutering the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and other amendments.    Bush could go either way.

There will always be TURDS in public office, no matter what background they have.  But, do you realize that something like less than 10 percent of our congressional reps/senators have any military background?   And  anyone wonders why they are so out of touch with what is needed to win any conflict we will EVER get into?

I think that they should be Veterans...
But the Dumpocrats will just say "Bill Clinton wasn't a veteran, and He was the GREATEST PRESIDENT IN HISTORY!!!!"

Remember that in 2000, and 2004; according to the Defeaticrats, Bush wasn't a veteran because he only served in the Air Guard.

Aside...what president in the 20th Century wasn't a veretan.    I don't know...does anybody??

It should be mandatory to vote period, much less run for public office--if not military service for all, then some form of civil equivalent for those who cannot serve in the military for whatever reason.

And yes I know, I know;  Sieg Heil! and all that…

John Kerry was a specialopSealNavyGruntAquaAirBorneslippedoverintoCanbodiahushhushcanttalkaboutthatstuff kinda guy.   His missions were so secret he didn't even know about them.  Someone with that much power and knowledge is a threat to any peaceful society.  Please don't disrespect Mr.Kerry.  Big people are listening.

Good idea.
Here are three four counts against that.
Jim Murtha, Jimmy Carter, John Kerry, and John McCain.

The military has it's share of shitheads, just like any other line of work.
Serving in the military does not make you better, worse, smarter, dumber, more qualified, or less qualified to lead the nation.

No.  Military service does not a qualified individual make.  A lifetime civilian who is willing to defer to his Generals on military matters and seek out good advice from those with real experience can be just as good of a president or public servant as any veteran.

As much as I hate to say so, I have to go with no.

Good and bad on both side.
In all honesty there haven't been all that many truly great Presidents.  Teddy Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan are about the only 2 in the past century that are stand outs as far as I am concerned.  All the rest sucked in some way and in the case of LBJ and Carter,  just flat out sucked in every way and harmed the country badly. As far as I am concerned GW Bush is about a half a step up on Clinton.

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

I think restricting the vote to a tiny fraction of the population (the same fraction that has access to the military hardware) is a nutty idea.  Explain to me what the hell restricting the vote to military is supposed to accomplish.

And how would you legally get this done anyways?  And once done, how the hell would you prevent an armed rebellion?  I for one would take up arms in a situation where the government infringed on my right to vote because I hadn't served in the military.

If you think you're under-appreciated or not paid enough, fine.  DON'T serve in the military.  Its a JOB.  People get PAID to be in the military.  They have my respect, but they don't deserve MORE rights than the rest of the citizenry.

What if the candidate WANTED to serve, but due to medical conditions could not serve? Let's say the candidate was a LEO and lost his leg in an MVA while trying to catch a bad-guy, and after the local MEPS big-wig gave him the once-over, decided a "crip" ain't gonna work in the US Military?? - - - Would you vote against a candidate like this??  (based soley on NOT having served in the US Military!)

There are many reasons why a politician may not have served in the US Military, or may have had limited service.

If we were to base our votes on military service ONLY then it is clear that an Officer will far outweigh any NCO - why? Well, FUCKIN-AYE... OFFICERS ARE THE SHIZZNIT!!!

How about a former Lt Col versus an A1C??  What if the Lt Col was so unqualified in "the real world" and the former A1C was far more experienced and qualifed in politics/law/public administration?  Would you vote for the Lt Col just because he was a LT COL and the other guy was nothing more than an E3???

Nope, let the voters decide if military service makes the candidate a better choice.
