I know this is a dupe.
This has likely been discussed on several accounts as a matter of fact, so what say you? Should previous military service be mandatory for a US Presidential Candidate? Poll coming.....sorry TRG, not that kind |
It should be mandatory for ANYONE running for public office, IMHO.
Lot of good it would do, look at Kerry. |
Founding Fathers didn't think so.
I'll run with that. LBJ, Kerry, Carter all served. Hell, Clinton is the only president since FDR who didn't serve. |
Absolutely not. Military veteran != great president. The country cannot be run like the military; the president is not a general and people don't ask how high when he says jump. I'm also suspicious of high profile military people who have gone into politics. It seems to me that more often than not they are ready and willing to abridge citizens rights. Kerry, Clark, McCain, etc. have all come out on the side of neutering the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and other amendments. Bush could go either way. |
There will always be TURDS in public office, no matter what background they have. But, do you realize that something like less than 10 percent of our congressional reps/senators have any military background? And anyone wonders why they are so out of touch with what is needed to win any conflict we will EVER get into? |
I think that they should be Veterans...
But the Dumpocrats will just say "Bill Clinton wasn't a veteran, and He was the GREATEST PRESIDENT IN HISTORY!!!!" Remember that in 2000, and 2004; according to the Defeaticrats, Bush wasn't a veteran because he only served in the Air Guard. Aside...what president in the 20th Century wasn't a veretan. I don't know...does anybody?? |
It should be mandatory to vote period, much less run for public office--if not military service for all, then some form of civil equivalent for those who cannot serve in the military for whatever reason.
And yes I know, I know; Sieg Heil! and all that… |
John Kerry was a specialopSealNavyGruntAquaAirBorneslippedoverintoCanbodiahushhushcanttalkaboutthatstuff kinda guy. His missions were so secret he didn't even know about them. Someone with that much power and knowledge is a threat to any peaceful society. Please don't disrespect Mr.Kerry. Big people are listening. |
The problem isn't Congresscritters without military service, the problem is Congresscritters dictating military doctrine. |
Klintoon wasn't |
.....without any knowledge of what they are dictating....exactly my point. |
Since this isn't the Roman Republic, I say no. It can be a plus, but not necessarily. Would Murtha or Kerry be great Presidents?
ETA: Too many poll options! WOOOHOOOO! |
No. And that would violate the 14th Amendment.
We don't need to create a higher class of citizens with more rights. |
So we should listen to Kerry and Murtha? Gotcha. |
No, got you. Without other informed congresscritters, those 2 can say what they want and there is no one in their own party to tell them they are full of sh*&. |
what he said. I'm shocked that 16 people have responded 'yes' so far |
Good idea. Here are Jim Murtha, Jimmy Carter, John Kerry, and John McCain. The military has it's share of shitheads, just like any other line of work. Serving in the military does not make you better, worse, smarter, dumber, more qualified, or less qualified to lead the nation. |
The Founder's disagree with you. They placed civilians are in charge of the military for a reason. |
You forgot John McCain (R) Media Jimmah Carter (D) N. Korea Jack Murtha (D) N. Vietnam Charlie Rangel (D) Harlem |
I have never stated a military person should be in charge...Geez, read the posts.
No. Military service does not a qualified individual make. A lifetime civilian who is willing to defer to his Generals on military matters and seek out good advice from those with real experience can be just as good of a president or public servant as any veteran.
No
Military experience is as good of an indicator of a good president as being religious does. |

Presidents who served in wars
George Washington - Commander in Chief of Continental Army during the American Revolution. James Monroe - served in American Revolution Andrew Jackson - American Revolution, War of 1812, First Seminole War William Henry Harrison - Indian wars in the NW territory, War of 1812 John Tyler - War of 1812 Zachary Taylor - War of 1812, Black Hawk, Second Seminole, and Mexican wars Franklin Pierce - Mexican War James Buchanan - War of 1812 Abraham Lincoln - Black Hawk War Andrew Johnson - Civil War Ulysses Grant - Mexican War, Civil War Rutherford Hayes - Civil War James Garfield - Civil War Chester Arthur - Civil War Benjamin Harrison - Civil War William McKinley - Civil War Theodore Roosevelt - Spanish-American War Harry Truman - WWI Dwight Eisenhower - WWII General John Kennedy - WWII Lyndon Johnson - WWII Richard Nixon - WWII Gerald Ford - WWII George Bush - WWII Presidents who were in the military but who saw no action James Madison James Polk Millard Fillmore Jimmy Carter Ronald Reagan - kept out of combat due to bad eyesight George W. Bush Presidents with no military experience John Adams Thomas Jefferson John Quincy Adams Martin Van Buren Grover Cleveland William Taft Woodrow Wilson Warren Harding Calvin Coolidge Herbert Hoover Franklin Roosevelt Bill Clinton |
Whaddaya expect from that bunch. Adams and Jefferson avoided military service. And although Madison got himself appointed commander of his local militia unit, he had a not from his doctor to get out of any actual active service. |
Taft, Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover & Frankie Roosevelt. |
You forgot Jefferson Davis - Mexican War. |
As much as I hate to say so, I have to go with no. Good and bad on both side. In all honesty there haven't been all that many truly great Presidents. Teddy Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan are about the only 2 in the past century that are stand outs as far as I am concerned. All the rest sucked in some way and in the case of LBJ and Carter, just flat out sucked in every way and harmed the country badly. As far as I am concerned GW Bush is about a half a step up on Clinton. |
I say NO. It smacks of the line in Starship Troopers; Service Guarantees Citizenship...
A book about a totalitarian futuristic regime... Hell, we're all members of the militia anyway... |
Don't laugh. There are a few nutjobs on this board who think military service should be a requirement to vote. I even saw one of them USE THAT MOVIE as "evidence" that it somehow worked... |
I agree, but the military is not obliged to act just because the President says jump. They are obligated to shoot down ideas that are not feasable. |
I think it should be mandatory before you can legally get a civilian job.
...as there will always be people who value the ideals of self gratification over all others. |
What the hell is that supposed to mean? I think restricting the vote to a tiny fraction of the population (the same fraction that has access to the military hardware) is a nutty idea. Explain to me what the hell restricting the vote to military is supposed to accomplish. And how would you legally get this done anyways? And once done, how the hell would you prevent an armed rebellion? I for one would take up arms in a situation where the government infringed on my right to vote because I hadn't served in the military. If you think you're under-appreciated or not paid enough, fine. DON'T serve in the military. Its a JOB. People get PAID to be in the military. They have my respect, but they don't deserve MORE rights than the rest of the citizenry. |

There are many reasons why a politician may not have served in the US Military, or may have had limited service. If we were to base our votes on military service ONLY then it is clear that an Officer will far outweigh any NCO - why? Well, FUCKIN-AYE... OFFICERS ARE THE SHIZZNIT!!! How about a former Lt Col versus an A1C?? What if the Lt Col was so unqualified in "the real world" and the former A1C was far more experienced and qualifed in politics/law/public administration? Would you vote for the Lt Col just because he was a LT COL and the other guy was nothing more than an E3??? |
Nope, let the voters decide if military service makes the candidate a better choice.
