I can get a SAR 8 in .308 for one of my AR's. Here's the description...
Springfield Armory SAR-8 .308 SA's version of the H&K G-3. Pistol grip not thumbhole stock w/ green furniture.

Should I do it????? How much do mags run for this gun???

Mags for CETME's and G-3's run 7-12 bucks for serviceable used ones. I'd consider the trade but I would want to shoot the SAR 8 before hand.

I have purchased magazines for as low as $4.00 each. Does it have an aluminun or steel receiver?

Tapco has G3 mags for $3.50 right now. I'm not sure if I would trade. These are built on the bulky Federal Arms alluminum receiver. They are a lot nicer than the Century Federal Arms ones, but still doesn't look like a real HK91 and they won't accept the wide forearm. You might as well buy a Century Arms one for four hundred bucks with the stamped receiver and put the wide forearm on it. I'd say your M4gery is probably worth about double the Century one.

...with the (current) tie-breaking vote. "One" of your AR's?!?! Diversify man!

If it's one of the Greek imports like mine it was built on HK licensed tooling to HK specs. It's as good as an authentic HK-91. As others have noted, mags are cheap and plentiful. Oh yes, the FAC aluminum receivers were only used on the last production runs of the SAR-8. Not all SAR-8s have this receiver.

I think the going rate for the non-aluminum receivered SAR-8s is between 1000 and 1500, in LNIB condition anyway. But I'd definitely make sure it had the normal style receiver first.

If it is a Greek steel receiver gun go for it. But.... there is a lot of confusion on these guns as to pre/postban status. There are a lot of thumbhole guns that have been converted. There is a lot of debate as to legality, so check with S'field to determine configuraton when shipped. If Greek, you will never regret the trade.
