I'd like a good quality (nut not rediculously expensive) bolt action in 30.06 or 300 win mag. I'd like to keep the cost of the rifle alone to about $600 or less. I've heard this model is the most accurte out of the box.  What say all of you? How does it compare to the Ruger M77 Mark II? Thanks in advance.

Definately a better factory trigger on the Remington. I don't really care for the Ruger integral scope systems either, and I have 3 Ruger rifles. It is very hard getting the rings aligned. Lapping is a [b]must[/b].

I use the Leupold Duel-Dovetail mounts on my BDLs. They are rock-solid after I weld the rings to the base, and 1/5 the cost of the Mk4 'Extreme Police Duty' Leupolds.  After mounting the bases, I mixed JB weld in the pocket. Then I turn in the dovetails and lap the rings.  

I see there's a sale at Hoplite on the Rem M700 Police models. I've always wanted to pick one of these up, but prices on the .308 are $689 and the .300 Mag is $739.  

Well good luck. Both the Ruger and Remington are great rifles, as is the Winchester Model 70. These are the only 3 bolts brands I've owned, so I can't comment on the Sako's, Tikka's, etc....

Check the latest SGN, Kieslers has the ones you are looking for in a SS 24 inch barrel for $349 or so.

I would say that you can't go wrong with either.  I am partial to the Ruger though.  I have the 30.06 all weather with a Leupold scope and it has been a truly amazing weapon.  I am very pleased with the gun and I don't feel as confident with any other weapon in my collection.  I have a browning with the boss system in the same caliber.  That should tell you something.

The answer is YES. Buy it.

You can find less expensive rifles, but you won't find a better rifle. A 700 Police DM will be a tad more but worth the extra.

700 best bang for the buck-stick with a fixed magazine imo- Do you really need the 30-06   300 mag? - you can do a lot of interesting things with the 700 due to a plethora of aftermarket parts and good gunsmiths- look at Talley or Badger mounts and Rings and Leupold scope....imo

I have a 700 Varmit in .223. I love it. Only thing is the barrel is a 1 in 12 twist, so it favors the lighter bullets.  With hand loads it shoots about .5 moa with me shooting. I am happy.

I did a lot of research when I was originally looking for a "sniper rifle" and one of the comments I found which solidified my decision is "the Remington 700 was one of the more accurate items out of the box".

I think I'd go with the 700 too....You might look around and see if you can find a used one,one often finds these in nice shape for a lot less than new, You know the kind I'm talking about, guy buys it goes hunting with it maybe twice,cleans it (maybe not) and it sits in the closet for twenty years until the guy dies,wife sells it to gun dealer, you buy cheap!! 30-06 is a fairly common caliber, should be easy to find a nice used one, I'd also take a good look at the sako's too, they're good rifles, and the prices are attractive as well.

I have a 700 Sendero in 7mm Mag.  I wish I would have heard abot the 7mm STW before I bought it.  Instead of the 300 Win. Mag. take a look at the Remington Ultra Mag.  No useless belt and it's easier to load.

Also I read an eval about a bunch of out the box bolt rifles in the American Rifleman.  

The hands down winner for accuracy and function was Savage.

I have the 700 BDL/VLS in .223, it's a very accurate rifle and excellent quality. I would suggest this rifle to anyone looking for a bolt action rifle.

As of lately I have heard many complaints about box stock Remingtons.

I personally love my 700 VLS in .308 but it is not as acurate as my Savage. With a replacement trigger (the stock one sucked) this this is an unbelievable tack driver. It was also much cheaper than my remington.

Yes, get the Remington 700 BDL(floorplate door magazine).
 Model: Varmint Synthetic(less than a PSS, and still has the bedding block in the stock.  The stock is a little bit less of a handful, too.)
Caliber: .308 (reason being that you can get "Enhanced Power" ammunition to approximate the .30-06 in energy, and reap the benefits of the shorter action and bolt throw.
Scope:  NIKON; Leupold; or?
Bipod: Harris swivel model.

You will be REAL glad you got the Remington.  The Military & Police use them for a reason.
Mine is a 7MM Rem.Mag. in a Bell&Carlson Thumbhole Sporter stock; Leupold 4.5-14x40 Tactical Mil-Dot scope.  No other modifications and I get 1-1.5" MOA @100-yds.  I Love this rifle.  It is the one that instills the most confidence in me and I trust it to perform correctly.

dillweed, i own both savage and remington bolt guns. both are excellent. you actually can get a "fancier" savage rifle for the same amount as a bdl.(classic/safari) $for$ you can`t beat the savage. but, remington 7oo does have a lot going for it. bdl is beautiful gun out of the box. to be honest, i have been looking at howa`s and cz rifles lately. i`m pretty much leaning toward a cz550 in 308. check them all out. rugers are good but there are some guys that complain on the trigger. a lot of good advice on this post.....B&G

I've heard that Remington may have acquired a quality control problem, you might take a look at the Winchester Stealth, or the Classic(controled round feed) Model 70. Good Luck

What's the top choice in a good bolt-action?
For over 30 years the answer has been: the Remington M700. BUT- what's the recent story being repeated again and again about the M700 being unsafe? That it can FIRE a round when you take the safety off? This has happened to too many people to be just a fluke. If it makes the rifle fire they should call it a trigger NOT a safety. Just be CAREFUL and point that thing in a safe direction when you take the safety off. The Remington is respected worldwide and I've been it's admirer for many years but I am concerned by new reports of it being dangerous.

Thw 700 Rem is a great rifle. Good trigger and accurate. I've owned both and like the Ruger also. Each has it's advantages. If you aren't a rifle nut, the 700 will probably take less tuning to get it's best accuracy. The M77 mkII has a better safety system and is a controlled round feed Mauser type action. You won't go wrong with either.

You should definitely check out the new Remington 710. www.remington.com Its a great bargain and is offered in 30-06. It even comes with a free bushnell scope.

Hard for me to write this Al, but I must jump in.

There are 12 710's sitting on the racks in the shop here. They are 'nice' for someone who will fire less than a box of ammo a year and just wants to try hunting.

1) The scope is a model that has frequently been on sale at ACE hardware for $29.95

2) There is no way I would use the factory mount system on any of my rifles. There is absolutely no alloys in my rings/bases, only solid steel.

3) Although the bolt lugs engage the barrel, as with some high doller modes like styer Tacticals, they are not additionally 'pressed', and are simply held on by 2 set screws.

4) The plastic(nylon) housing that holds the trigger componants within, which is part of the bolt sleeve system(more to follow), just can't provide precise adjustment and longevity. When metel parts move within plastic assemblies, one will wear faster.

5) The plastic bolt sleeve system. This sleeve partially surrounds the bolt and 'grabs' the bolt during cycling. I would have to vote it the most un-smooth bolt action of the past 2 centuries. Follow-up shots will require a cheater-pipe and lubrication.

6) The Trigger. I dry-fired several of the 710's. One time I thought the safety was on, since the trigger didn't break. No, it was just an attourney influenced, safety trigger. I'm sure a scale would have read it at over 15#.

7) My final complaint. Instead of waiting for a new law from the Govt, Rem went ahaid and installed integral safety locks on this rifle. Now the politicians can say, "See, they did it. Why can't the rest?"

It wouldn't matter to me if it shot .00001" groups at 500yds, I would not buy this 'politically correct', Fisher Price model. There are several(all) bolt actions that are a better choice.

If someone wanted to make some money, they could invent an aftermarket metal trigger/bolt sleeve system for the 710. It is surely needed.

I would probably pay $100 for the 710 if it came with $75 worth of free ammo. Good Luck      

While the only thing that is left that came from the Remington Factory is the action, it is a Model 700. The action has  been trued and cleaned up, lugs lapped and Bluprinted. Has an 8 oz Jewell trigger, Leupold 8.5x 25x 50 MM Long Range Scope w/target dot reticle in is in a AICS Stage one stock with a Detachable Mag that works. It is in .308 Caliber and shoots little knots at 100, 200 & 300 yds.

My 700vls, shoots great, I think it's a tad better than my friends savage 10fp, but not by much.  If your shooting animals, they will never know the difference. If your shooting paper, I think my 700 is the way to go.  But, he's done some trigger work on his, its not bad, I haven't on mine, and then you can just about get 2 savages for the price of 1 remington. Still I like my gun!!

I would highly recommend the 700, especiallay the PSS.  I use one at work, and love it.  Stay away from the DM model, they don't always feed right.  Remington is doing away with them in their police line due to the number of problems/complaints.

My 700VSSF is shooting sub 1" groups right out of the box (100 yds) and it's not even broke in yet....

Get the 700 Get the 700  Get the 700.....

Unless you are going shooting over 600 to 800 yards I would get the Remington varmint synthetic in 308. If you do need the 30-06 or 300 I would get the Sendero as I believe it is a heavier barrelled version.
