[Last Edit: 9/2/2015 12:27:22 PM EDT by rdpayne23]
Backstory: I'm a Marine Recruiter out in the cornfields of Illinois. We are renting a house in a nice subdivision and it's where the last recruiter lived as well. It made the transition from Hawaii to Illinois with very little move time a breeze. Again, we're living in pretty much the only nice subdivision in a town of about 3,000. Our landlord lived in the house starting in about 2008ish and moved to Virginia two years ago, which is when the last recruiter moved in. He never had a problem with the landlord and I personally think he's a good landlord. The type that when the AC starts blowing hot, he has a repairman out within an hour even being on a Saturday. We rarely speak unless there's a problem with the house and my rent is set up as a direct deposit to him. He looks to be in his 60's and is of middle eastern dissent. (I've never really cared to ask where he was from).

So my wife tells me last night that he called the house yesterday in what sounded like a "concerned or panicked" voice. He asked if we have any of the bills in his name because he needed to prove his residence. She clearly told him no and that all of the bills are in our name since we live in the house currently. He then went on to say that his bank accounts have been frozen until he can prove he resides in the U.S.. He then went onto say it's because he's Iranian and something about the embargo act.

He has Virginia tags on his car bc yes, I've scoped him out already and he told us that he lives in Virginia. Clearly he doesn't because he's still trying to list his address as our house that we're renting from him. He goes by the name Ali but I know that's not his real name.

Should I be concerned or do anything about this?

If anything, you might be living in it rent free once he gets deported.

Didn't want to change address and tags on car.

Not your problem.  Fuck him.

Pay your bills and tell him to fuck off when he asks you to lie for him.

Definitely not. I'm not dumb. I just want to make sure I'm not going to end up on a watch list because I rent from his ass. I mean he's a nice guy, but I'm defenitely not going to give up my career so he can make money.

Obviously, this is the correct answer.

So he owns the house? Or are you subleasing from him? If he owns it, he should have a tax bill, insurance bill, etc. Not sure what he would have if he is leasing it, and then subleasing it to you.

He owns the house and we are renting it one a one year lease.

He was more referring to utility or cable bills to actively show he's living there now. Clearly, he isn't living there and we even have it agreed that he can't even enter the property unless we are home (bc I don't want him scoping out my safe and where guns are hidden throughout the house. Call me paranoid

One of my customers is from Iran. He told us to never trust Iranians.
Link Posted: 9/2/2015 1:04:10 PM EDT
Aren't taxes cheaper on a primary residence vs a property you rent out?

Maybe he's been reporting that as his primary residence as opposed to a rental property to cheat taxes.

Check your local assessor's web page- you should be able to find out easily whose name the house is in....

Maybe the regime is giving him a hard time because he is a Christian?  Not the ca order class with some in govt.  There used to be a lot of them in Iran, until jimmy carter helped turn things around there.  Of course if he were a muslim, then the obummer regime would have no problem with him, even if he were a known quds force member.

had an economics professor from Iran, (weird huh?)

he was pretty much GD's wet dream on how gov't should stay out of private business and had a passionate dislike for what was happening to his former country.

I would carry on as normal, pay my bills, make sure everything is documented, and MMOB.

Certainly collect any info you can on the landlord/situation, but to whom would you report anything?

Would it be wise to bring your CO in on the info?
Link Posted: 9/2/2015 1:19:58 PM EDT
I'd be looking to move, it would suck to get kicked out with nowhere to go.

OP,
He may have borrowed money/refinanced and listed a rental as a primary residence to get a better rate.

The frozen bank account thing is worrisome.

FWIW I had Iranian neighbors growing up, they GTFO when the Revolution happened, nice hardworking folks.

Didn't see an answer to my question.

Dunno about where you are, but in VA many tax collectors online systems allow you to look up who owns property. Do you have a physical address you send rent to?  Might be interesting to see if names match for your own edification.

I'd sit tight, but I'd save extra money and look up tenant laws in my state. If the bank repos or something, how long will you have to gtfo? Stuff worth knowing.

Nice yard. Grass looks healthy.

EDIT: Oops, forgot about the story. It sounds fishy to me. Forget bills. How does he not have proof of home ownership?

It sounds off.  Maybe e-mail the DHS about it and provide the guy's name.

Did he decorate the house with cheesy blue carpeting, white statues and golden curtain rods?
