I am looking into getting a good stash of 12 ga. going. I have a smooth bore open choke and I'm thinking about running Brenneke Tactical Home Defense 2 3/4" 1oz. Slug and 12 Gauge Fiocchi Reduced Recoil Nickel Plated 00 Buck. I have shot the Fiocchi and liked it and will buy more. Are the Brenneke worth buying? What do you guys run for ammo in your shotguns?

bird shot

I have a nasty load for pheasants that we hand load. 1 3/8 oz of buffered #5's. Comes out at about 1330 FPS. Kills them deader then a door nail even in late season when they have their winter fat on!

71/2 lead shot great for birds.
Link Posted: 7/25/2009 7:29:48 PM EST
get 00 buck and 1 oz. slugs for SHTF and defence, 8 shot for appartment defence and plinking. as far as brand, buy small amounts of everything, see what shoots the best in your gun and then buy that in bulk

I am down to my last 5 rounds of #1 Buck; those are in the gun. But, I have an ample supply of Hornady TAP ))B, and Federal Tactical 00B.
Link Posted: 7/25/2009 7:39:56 PM EST
I purchase Federal 2.75" slugs and Remington 00 2.75" or 3" buck for HD, should I not be able to get to my AR or cannot use it for whatever reason. They hit pretty soundly. I'm sure it'd be a lot worse on the other end.
Link Posted: 7/25/2009 7:40:17 PM EST
Buck n' slug, whatever brand. Ixnay on the birdshot, any worthwhile defense round is gonna overpenetrate like crazy. Nature o' the beast, omlets, eggs, etc. If I should ever feel the need to shoot at someone (God forbid), it's because my fat furry backside is in real danger, & I ain't interested in playin' around w/ half-measures & fucking birdshot.
Link Posted: 7/25/2009 7:45:58 PM EST
Federal Tactical 00 Buck primarily.

I still have some BRI Sabot Slugs around the house too. I usually keep two of those in the Speed Feed stock.

When I lived out in the sticks with bears, 3" Mag Rem nickel-plated 000 BK

In a city apartment, 2.75" Fed #4 BK

Now- semirural, 2.75 Fed or Rem 00 BK, though my shotgun isn't my go-to anymore

For defense, I have both 00 buck and 0 buck.

ETA: And for dove I use 7 1/2. Rabbits get #4.

SGs don't pull primary HD duty here. That's for ARs (and handguns - since they are usually still the absolute closest at hand).

But, when I do have a shotgun loaded for HD, it is with my very small stash of Winchester Ranger reduced-recoil 00 buck.

What they all see a lot more often are my preferred general-purpose target loads - 1oz. #8 shot @ 2-3/4 DE. (Currently, I have a supply of cheapo Federal TGT121-8's).
Link Posted: 7/25/2009 7:56:11 PM EST
I usually use #4 Buck, the last time I bought buckshot I couldn't find any #4 I did find a bunch of 08 WCC 00 though so that's what all my shotguns are loaded with currently.

2 3/4 Federal Tac loads

Have some 3" 1 1/4 ounce magnum slugs. Neighbors would not like that very much.

buy a box or two each of as many different loads as possible and shoot them through your gun to find out what it likes best. Use a patterning board for the shot loads.

I don't have any pics but I wouldn't want to be downrange at 25 yards.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't reload the hulls.

I don't ever recall seeing buckshot pellets for sale though. Do you reload buckhot?

Same in 12.

If you are shooting deer at a good range, then I would test various loads for pattern in the gun, and with various chokes. If you are using it for close in defensive work, just about any buckshot will be more than fine. I would not sweat it, and would buy whatever I could get for a deal. I would probably stick with 2 3/4" shells and not look back.

This in the reduced recoil flavor. The pattern will stay on an adult torso out to 25 yards from either my Mossberg 500 Mariner or Remington 870. Both have cylinder bore barrels.

You can get Hornady unplated 00 buck from MidwayUSA. Good luck on primers though

I'm waiting for the ammo craze to die down for me to get into reloading.

Good stuff

Successfully being a douche in two ways...

1. You shoot them
2. You are literally rubbing salt in their wounds

I have 3 30cal ammo boxes full of 12ga. One has birdshot, sizes #6-#8. Another has slugs, Brenneke KOs with a few Federal hollowpoints mixed in. The final box is nothing but #4 buck.

I need a few more boxes of birdshot, another box of slugs, and I'd like a box of #00buck.

I patterned several different loads in a semi auto, Mossberg 930spx
Best pattern was Federal with flite control, hands down.
Low recoil loads in the new gun had a couple of FTE/FTF.
Full power loads no problems, same excellent pattern as LR Federal.
I went with Federal LE 127 00.

To find the best round for your gun, you really need to test different loads.
The Federal with flite control works.

AIM Surplus has a good deal on 12 ga 00 buckshot. I ordered 100 rounds of it, although I haven't fired any of it.

My take is that slugs have a place , but it's mostly for taking large game , or if you're forced to
use a shotgun past 50 yards . Other then that , I want a multi pellet load for home defence , and for
that any 2.75" buckshot from #4 up fit's that bill well for me .

I have also tried all the Federal loadings with the flight control wad , both LE and Sporting . In Cyl bore guns
like the 870 , Win 1300 and Moss 590 , I also tried them in my M1S90 with full and extra full chokes .
There is almost no difference in the pattern of all the guns and loads inside 5 yards . Basically they all
shot under 3" with most under 2" . Which is great for a well aimed shot ( Like Slugs ) but IMHO not so good for what
will likely take place in a high stress , poor lighting event of say a surprise home invasion where you are in bed
or otherwise have almost no time to react .

Sure it's a worst case scenario , but isn't that what you should try to prepare for ?

For me , that means full power #1 or #4 buck which pattern out to around 6" @ 5 yards ( the long end of typical in home distances )
and with 16-27 pellets in that area it greatly increases the chance of getting a few on target which gains you some time
for a follow up if needed . As noted I prefer a full power loading over the reduced recoil , because like the flight control
wads, the low recoil stuff tends to shoot tighter groups , and with some loadings it contains fewer pellets as well .

Again , I used a worst case event , and I have the added luxury of not having to worry about where the strays might go .
In a better case scenario where I have time to employ the light and the sights , well then I have 16 or 27 pellets right where
I want them to go
