I know for years now FedEx and UPS require individuals to ship handguns overnight, but I thought FFLs had an exemption and could ship ground?

I'm selling a handgun out of state and called up 3 local FFLs to see what they'd charge to ship it.  First one said that it has to ship air, but can be 2 or 3 day air and would be about $60-80.  Next one said they charge a flat $65 to ship handguns and the third said he has to ship overnight so it wouldn't be any cheaper if I had him ship it than if I shipped it myself.

What's the deal?  I see all the time people selling handguns on the EE charging $25 to ship.  How are they able to ship for only $25?  I don't think this is just another stupid NJ gun law, at least as far as I know.

Priority mail through USPS?  When I spoke to all the local FFLs I didn't specify that I wanted it shipped FedEx or UPS.  Seems like none of them are aware of this option...

Either piss poor FFL's or they are trying to rip you.  We ship all handguns USPS priority.  Any FFL can and should do this.  Your FFL's are morons or thieves.

At our shop we use USPS Priority 99.5% of the time. A lot cheaper than Fed or UPS, especially if you can use the flat rate boxes.

The store where I work ships handguns via USPS Priority Mail, using the medium-size flat rate box. With insurance, it's only about $16.

All handguns I ship cost less then $12 USPS priority.  Some of the bigger dealers are only set up to use Fedex or UPS.  When I order handguns from a distributor they all come 2 day/overnight Fedex or UPS.

Thanks for the replies everyone.  I'm surprised that none of the local FFLs are aware of this.  When I spoke with them they all genuinely seemed to think they were not able to ship ground.  Now we'll see if I can convince any of them...

You'll find even people at the USPS who are not aware of the rules.
Last handgun I picked up at my Post Office, the clerk about blew a gasket and acted like she was doing me a favor by not ratting me out to the Postmaster for soing something she thought I couldn't do.
I tried explaining the rules but she waved me off and said she didn't want to hear what I had to say

Just a couple of forms, I think maybe a 1508 and I always include a copy of the ffl we are shipping to and his verification through the ffl check, priority always on handguns insurance and delivery confirmation and you are gtg.
