I knew I had suceeded when my drill sergeant handed me my blue cord and had to LOOK at my name tag to congratulate me.  Keep your mouth shut and enjoy the road marches.  Be glad you won't be at Harmony Church.

Well, you're first problem was enlisting as an 11X.  Now they can do whatever they want to you.  Lemme look into my crystal ball... yes, its coming in clear, I see mortarman in your future.  Have fun carrying around that baseplate

All kidding aside, good luck and have fun.

Learn to do two things really fucking well:

run like the wind ( you'll see what I mean when you do RIP )

walk with a heavy ruck very very quickly WITHOUT RUNNING OR JOGGING....

While at Airborne School, run and ruck your ass off.  Three weeks at 1/507 is hard for a lot of folks BUT Infantry and Marine types get out of shape REALLY quickly if they don't make up for it somehow.

Do not slack while in Airborne School, the temptation is there because your first two weeks are pretty much 5am to about 4pm.....then your free to go for the day...it is easy to want to go fuck off on Main Post or in Town.  DON'T DO IT.

You had darn well have your two mile run time down to UNDER twelve to twelve and a half  minutes if you want to hang in runs during RIP.  And Cardiac Hill is a WHORE on the way up......

but you haven't met Cardiac Hill.....................yet.

OSUT, Jump, RIP, then if you make it, Bat. Course if you dont get jump school you get to road march while the others guys jump.

I went through about a year and a half ago at 2-54 I had alot of buddies who went to Range Batt.  Best advice i could give you is just get the phyical part down, Rucking, running pushups and situps plus some pull ups.

There is no real way to prepare for the mental part I thought the NCO's at my unit ran a good pre-basic program but its nothing compared to what the drills at benning CAN do to you.

Another thing just be respectful, i made many dumb mistakes but i was 100% respectful and didn't bullshit the drills if you fuck up tell them, Drill Sergeant I fucked up.  Not "well i did this then this happened and ..."

Can't do Ranger Option without ABN....BAT means Basic Airborne Training

Leave any and all HSLD gear at home, you dont need it until your Fire Team leader at Regiment says its ok to have.

Take a pair of running shoes that are broken in, but not worn out.
Take a weekends worth of nice civillian clothing
Take a Winter Coat for your return home.

Not personal experience, but I have talked to several guys while at ABN school who had just come off of Sand Hill.

All advice given thus far gets a big +1

In addition, EMBRACE THE SUCK!

If you don't make it into the Rangers, then yes, Big Green will do with you what it likes--so prepare thyself in the ways prescribed!

There are people younger and older than you, I met several with degrees, which is increasingly common. Your age will not matter--let your word and deed represent you, and to each in the same way. In other words, don't fuck your buddy!

Barracks--you will get sick and be miserable. Happens because your buddies are from all over the country. Suck it up (you'll hear that a lot too...) unless it is life threatening or permanently damaging. HSLD gear, besides attracting negative attention, might get stolen (the intent is for you to learn to endure suffering, which such gear shows you are averse to).

Do not attract negative attention; I would argue one would actually do this more by NOT volunteering. SO, it would behoove you once more, to help your buddy.

ABN is reportedly really low key compared to basic. As stated above, you will be heading to RIP, so invest in your future by not slacking off.

The only way to get better at running is....to run. If you tire in the middle of a course, practice speeding up at this time! If you suck at hills, run hills! Google is your friend for safely and effectively planning training for your needs.

Hmm. What else...you can do nothing right, which is part of the breaking you down thing. And if someone says a certain activity is prohibited in aiding reinforcement (AKA, "getting smoked") that just means they do it when no one important is around.

AND, FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: The First Sergeant is called "FIRST SERGEANT". Stand at the position of parade rest when speaking or being spoken to, if you value your life.

Rank doesn't matter - as far as they care everyone's a private...

And didn't the Army combine the 11s from A, B, C, & H to A & B?

Good luck, and enjoy your (really, really long, if you do go Ranger) stay at wonderful (scorching, steamy, baking hot) Ft Benning...

Heck, add OCS to your list and you'll have done the entire show (just don't get stuck there like I have)....

Encouragement? Sorry, no. A very high percentage of people wash out of RIP, those that make it have only a good chance of getting through the actual course to a Ranger unit. Just the reality--the guys I met (see earlier post) had a pretty ambivelant attitude; all you can do is prepare yourself, and try to make sure you don't get a shit assignment if you wash out of RIP.
